“Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.” – Malcolm Forbes. My life experiences have provided me unique opportunities to contribute to and enhance both the diversity and culture on the NC State University campus. I was born and raised in an Asian-Indian first-generation immigrant household. I have visited India, observed their schooling system, and witnessed the lives of Indian teenagers. I was a leading member of the Cary Teen Council Executive Board – representing a group of eight hundred plus teenagers with diverse ethnicity and backgrounds uniting for the goal of serving our community. Lastly, I have spent the entirety of my junior and senior years taking collegiate level classes at Saint Augustine’s University – one of the highest regarded HBCUs in the nation.
During the ninth grade, I traveled with my family to Thamana – a village in India. I learned of exigencies of the education system in India; I witnessed poverty stricken students scraping to make ends meet and attend school daily. This life changing experience taught me to never take my privileges in education for granted. In the same way I assisted and aided teenagers in India, I want to use my experience to assist underdeveloped communities through NCSU’s 4 the World chapter. …show more content…
We worked with disabled children living in low-income areas in Raleigh, their lives vastly different from my own. As an influential member of the executive board at Cary Teen Council, I helped shape the future of the council and supported others to achieve their community service goals. I come with tremendous experience in public speaking, organizing events, leading teams of teenagers with diverse ethnicity and background, and helping them stretch beyond their abilities. I can use my skills and experience in numerous activities and clubs at NCSU, including but not limited to the Campus Toastmasters
