“Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.” – Malcolm Forbes. My life experiences have provided me unique opportunities to contribute to and enhance both the diversity and culture on the NC State University campus. I was born and raised in an Asian-Indian first-generation immigrant household. I have visited India, observed their schooling system, and witnessed the lives of Indian teenagers. I was a leading member of the Cary Teen Council Executive Board – representing a group of eight hundred plus teenagers with diverse ethnicity and backgrounds uniting for the goal of serving our community. Lastly, I have spent the entirety of my junior and senior years taking collegiate level classes at Saint Augustine’s University – one of the highest regarded HBCUs in the nation.
During the ninth grade, I traveled with my family to Thamana – a village in India. I learned of exigencies of the education system in India; I witnessed poverty stricken students scraping to make ends meet and attend school daily. This life changing experience taught me to never take my privileges in education for granted. In the same way I assisted and aided teenagers in India, I want to use my experience to assist underdeveloped communities through NCSU’s 4 the World chapter.

We worked with disabled children living in low-income areas in Raleigh, their lives vastly different from my own. As an influential member of the executive board at Cary Teen Council, I helped shape the future of the council and supported others to achieve their community service goals. I come with tremendous experience in public speaking, organizing events, leading teams of teenagers with diverse ethnicity and background, and helping them stretch beyond their abilities. I can use my skills and experience in numerous activities and clubs at NCSU, including but not limited to the Campus Toastmasters

Diversity Statement Edi Hernandez In an ever growing college community that welcomes more and more diversity it is important to understand the different backgrounds and accept those differences in order to grow together. Diversity means being able to emphasize with someone and embrace that person for who they are and not judge but to broaden our understanding of what it means to live and experience life in all types of ways. In this position I will have to interact and hear a lot of different backgrounds from student that are seeking services from the TRiO SSS STEM programs on Aims’ campus.…

As someone who grew up in a safe city with a supportive, middle-class family, and enrolled in a public school system that offered an abundance of valuable classes taught by extremely qualified teachers, I was blinded to how others live. As I became old enough to understand that the majority of people in the world would never live like me, I wanted to do something to change that. I was taken aback by the conditions of the families I was to help on my mission trip just south of me in Tennessee. I was not in the same United States that I knew. But that wasn’t what shocked me the most.…

Finally, I have been raised to see diversity as a basic strength of our nation. I believe that the future of positive diversity within our country is at a cross roads as another presidential election approaches. While political candidates leverage the differences within society to create fear, I hope to use this same diversity to better myself, my friends, and the university. I appreciate the efforts of the Ohio State University to promote diversity and inclusion and look forward to these experiences as I move on to the next chapter in my…

In seventh grade, I found myself thrust into the world of elite, predominantly white private schools. As a person of color coming into this environment, it seemed as if issues regarding racial diversity, religious diversity, socioeconomic status, and even colorism would be inevitable aspects of my experience. Initially, I did not acknowledge the presence of these issues in my new surroundings as they were topics that I had never encountered before and consequently did not fully understand. Slowly, through my personal experiences, I soon realized the relevance of these topics to not only my identity but to the broader community at Brearley. This realization steadily transitioned into a developing interest.…

I think that you are correct in the fact that a lot of organizations do have a diversity mission statement to help in fulfilling the legality of policies and procedures. It is sad that often times as women, we do still see not many changes in the way things are handled, like your situation. I think we as American have tried to take a step in the right direction, but I feel like the media in some aspect hinders the perspective of individual to not fully take a step forward without eventually having us take a step back, not just as it relates to women, but all diversity. Our textbook tells us all people should be treated with respect and dignity, and that in our dealing with people we must have an eyes-level approach (Manning & Curtis, 2008).…

Essay #3 Diversity has always been a big part of my life. As shown in my resume, I have a dual citizenship of the United States and Japan. Also shown in my resume, is the environment I surround myself in, such as the Boy Scouts of America. These are a couple of features that shape who I am today, and who I will be in the future. When most people discover my mother was born in Japan and I am a first generation, Japanese-American they are surprised.…

I know there is not much diversity in my life, but seeing how little there is on paper was truly eye opening. I have lived in Iowa my entire life and in general, Iowa is not an incredibly diverse state, especially in rural areas. Both of my parents are white and both of my brothers are white. My doctor, dentist, and dental hygienist are white. I grew up in a small town in North Iowa and there were around four people of color in my class of 90.…

As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. When interviewing John Killingbeck, a twenty-year-old student at SIUe, I learned that he has background that surprised and interested me immediately. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…

I have grown up in a country and time where progress has been definitive. It has been in the time that my feet imprinted this earth and my lungs breathed this air that the Supreme Court has passed a bill for marriage equality and in the last eight years my nation has elected the first man of color to lead our democracy. It is that man who has helped to cut carbon emissions while making true strides for equality. Equality is not found in the darkness of segregated spaces or within the confines of comfort. Tolerance and cooperation are constructed at the crossroads of diversity and conversation.…

I am a firm believer in that numbers and credentials do not define a person. I am not defined by my GPA or my ACT score, even though I worked diligently on both. I am defined by my service in my community and the relationships I have developed over the years. Even as a developing youth, I experienced diversity and activism. I have traveled thousands of miles to desolate Caribbean islands with natives living in shacks eager to tell spin tales of urban myths for you, and I have traveled locally around my hometown, providing dinner and fellowship with the underprivileged who could not attend Church that evening.…

As a Korean-American lesbian, I often wondered how other people of marginalized identities understand their sense of belonging in the larger society. I had not yet developed my sociological imagination to critically examine how larger social structures shape the ways people understand their social worlds. Now, my sociological training allows me to develop the theoretical, methodological, and organizational approaches necessary to explore how marginalized individuals navigate society, particularly how discrimination influences individuals’ identity processes, and challenge and/or shape societal understanding of their structural locations. My interest in diversity was shaped largely by my research experiences at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center.…
