Diversity Open Home: Case Study

press my interest in becoming a Diversity Intern at Amherst College. When I applied to the Amherst Diversity Open Houses (DIVOH) senior year of high school, I was just starting to think about the college process. Coming from a small town over ninety percent Caucasian, I was drawn to Amherst’s emphasis on diversity and wanted to visit my first liberal arts college. Once I arrived, I was astonished by the experiences of my fellow DIVOH students and became overwhelmed at how heterogeneous yet close-knit the Amherst community seemed. I felt like I belonged. My DIVOH experience was one of the main reasons I chose to come to Amherst. Now, I want to join the Diversity team to create positive experiences with prospective and admitted students and help them find a home at Amherst College.

Since my experience at DIVOH, I have grown to love Amherst College more. Wherever I go, I enjoy being able to strike up a great conversation and see many familiar faces. These connections are not only

Senior year, I became co-editor of the high school yearbook in a time of upheaval. Not only did yearbook no longer have a set class time, but the new yearbook teacher also had no experience with publications. Slowly, the after-school yearbook organization was whittled down to eight regularly contributing members. To meet the deadlines, my co-editor and I took action to reorganize the page assignments and to put in more hours at home. We also began communicating more with other members to ask for their input on pages. I organized collaborations outside the scheduled meeting times to fine tune colors and page layout. By relying on and helping others in the group, we filled the yearbook. Since Diversity Interns help coordinate many events, I plan to bring my ability to build relationships, communicate, and integrate different perspectives in order to best assist the prospective Amherst students and the Admissions

    I should reconsider my career choice of a chief diversity officer. The article, Experiences of Women of Color University Chief Diversity Officers (Nixon, M. L., 2016) uncovered the immense pressures both personally and professionally that women of color face in their quest to serve as catalyst for diversity in institutions of higher learning. The qualitative study conducted semi structured interviews with five women of color and to determine if the equities experienced relating to being chief diversity officers were a result of their race, gender or an intersectionality of both.
