Diversity is a very broad discussion today. It can range from race, gender, sexuality, political or religious views, or even mental disorders. In America, which is a melting pot of different cultures, seems to struggle with diversity in the one place it really shouldn’t, tv and movies. But how could the entertainment industry affect the way we view others? This happens simply by failing to represent diversity. Representation is the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature. Through representation on tv and movie, the characters that belong to various groups, cultures or lifestyles act as representatives interacting in the world. First, such brings together a well-rounded cast of diverse characters who share different ethnic backgrounds, sexualities, genders, and religions. This is an opportunity to share a wide range of different personalities and opinions despite the stereotypical depictions that exist. The show Brooklyn Nine-Nine comes to mind as depiction of this. This sitcom about the mis-adventures of a group of NYPD detectives and in the fictional 99th Precinct of New York who go through their day to day lives on the job. The show has been praised for not only having a multicultural cast, but for portraying them as actual people instead of tired old stereotype. In the article “'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' finds humor in humanity, not stereotypes” goes further by stating,”Instead, the laughs are found in how the stoic and hard-to-read new commander Holt reacts to Peralta’s antics or how badly Santiago wants to beat Peralta’s closure rate—not where they come from or who they sleep with. Detective Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) is in love with hard-to-get detective Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), a tough cookie who doesn’t speak with an accent or acts particularly sassy. Sgt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) is a hulk of a man who has become petrified of fighting crime since he became a father of twin girls; office secretary Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti) is just plain
