A few months ago I was offered a great opportunity from a mother of an autistic boy named Nick. I did not think twice about accepting this opportunity to become more diverse in my caretaking skills and found this offer as a compliment of the character others see in me. Nick and I spend a few hours a week together working on his everyday skills such as cooking, socializing, and managing money. Working with Nick is so much more than just helping him improve his skills, he helps me become a better person everyday by showing me what it is like to see the world through his eyes. Watching someone with a disability improve in the skills I have helped them learn is truly a different feeling of accomplishment that comes from being a caretaker. Working with someone with autism has allowed my patience to grow, my compassion to become stronger, and most of all my care taking abilities become greater. Nick has shown me many important things in life, but most importantly that individuals with disabilities are so much more than a diagnosis, which should be a concept all caretakers should
