“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color” (Maya Angelou). What is diversity? Diversity is the state of being diverse; variety. In better terms, diversity is the same as “different”. When diversity is discussed, we generally think of various ethnicities. Society seems to think diversity is “one dimensional”, however diversity is composed of many different aspects, such as sexual orientation, race, income, family structure, culture, and education. If we define diversity as any difference between and among people, we immediately face the obstacle of figuring out which differences are at play as well as which are significant. …show more content…
Diversity is best learned through observing the behavior of the organization's leaders. Many companies understand this and begin to work towards a better environment, but what about people in general? Outside work? Do we understand it? Do we understand the benefits of diversity, or differences, in our society? A workplace’s leader plays a more dominant role than any type of training that can be given. “Equality is a recurrent topic in today’s society”, says Chancellor Epps. “I want my students and staff to be aware that no matter your ethnicity, sex, or so forth, we are all one unit. We all are here at Louisiana Delta for a purpose, whether it may be to teach or learn. I have to set an example for my students and coworkers that says hey, no matter what we are all in this together.” Epps is aware of all the labels society has as far as ethnic groups and women in our workplaces or anywhere for that matter. “Diversity is inevitable, it is something that needs to be accepted, because everyone deserves an opportunity, no matter the
