Diversity In The Workplace

“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color” (Maya Angelou). What is diversity? Diversity is the state of being diverse; variety. In better terms, diversity is the same as “different”. When diversity is discussed, we generally think of various ethnicities. Society seems to think diversity is “one dimensional”, however diversity is composed of many different aspects, such as sexual orientation, race, income, family structure, culture, and education. Diversity is best learned through observing the behavior of the organization's leaders. Many companies understand this and begin to work towards a better environment, but what about people in general? Outside work? Do we understand it? Do we understand the benefits of diversity, or differences, in our society?
