Diversity In The Workplace: A Location Analysis

Improved Essays
The location I live in is an area that lacks diversity. Throughout my schooling I have learned a great deal about learning with different cultures and remaining open and trying not to jump to conclusions that could potentially offend someone. However, we live somewhere where the culture is not rich. Most of the experience I have got working with other cultures has all came from professors and reading about other cultures. My location is one where there are many low-income individuals, and many are struggling with various drug abuse issues. Growing up exposed to alcoholism, as well as living in a location where drug abuse is prevalent has been my motivation to go into this field. I want to help and share the knowledge I’ve learned to better …show more content…
We all have biases, we wouldn’t be individuals if we didn’t have biases. They are healthy, it is when we begin pushing them onto others that they become a problem. Any good professional is aware of their biases. Being self aware and knowing what you believe in and don’t is important in the field of social work. I have learned to accept my own biases as well as the biases of others. I do my best to accept others views and values of the world uncritically. There is a reason our society is made up of so many different types. It is okay to not agree with other viewpoints, but criticizing them and telling them they are wrong is less than ideal. Throughout college and learning about issues in society I’ve became aware of my biases and people I can work with, as well as people I don’t feel that I would be able to work with. There is a reason there are so many individuals in the field that I am entering. The diverse society we live in is diverse for a reason. It takes all types to make up our society. Being different is a good thing but putting others down for who they are, the color of their skin, or who they love is too far. I can assure my biases don’t negatively effect my clients by being self aware and know people who I am not comfortable with working with. I will also be aware of places I can refer people that I do not feel able to work with and benefit in anyways. Everyone has the right to treatment and to have chances, so if I

Diversity is not just age, gender, race. it is much more complicated that we can imagine. In my opinion diversity is about our connectedness and our interactions where the lines cross. Diversity is a connection between our professional life and personal life and the framework for interrelationships between people. In the workplace we face employees with different cultural backgrounds, perceptions ,capabilities and disabilities that they bring to their workplace.…

I was neutral for both race and sexuality; however, I seemed to have a negative bias towards older people. This result was somewhat shocking, I knew I had a preference for young children but I did not know that I had a preference for younger people over older people. This bias could pose a possible problem in the event that a child in my class lives with a grandparent, or had older parents. However now that I am aware of my bias I can face it.…

DeVany identified the fifteen roles that leaders play in order to manage performance and accountability of a team and its members. However, based on experience, one can believe that when working in any specific team environment, the manager cannot conceivably play all these roles at an effective level. Instead, if a team is well organized, the members of the team are also tasked with taking on some of these roles and responsibilities. The first part of managing a team with diverse personalities is knowing which personalities complement each other and the team.…

In order to work with clients from all different backgrounds, it is necessary to know how to adjust your method to each individual. On my journey to becoming a human services professional, I have dealt with my own prejudices like never before. Kyurstina, your discussion board addressed a lot of the issues facing diversity in the workplace today. I especially enjoyed the section which discussed the age difference between employees. One of my favorite classes that I have taken through Liberty spent a lot of time discussing the generation gap between employees. In order to fully understand it, one must understand the mindset of the eras. For instance, it has been stated that Baby Boomers, those born between 1946-1962, live to work; whereas Generation Xers, born between 1963-1983, work to live.…

Age wise, older people might think that I am immature, unwise, dependent, brainwashed by technology, indecisive, and impulsive. Sex wise, people might think that just because I am a female that I am weak, emotional, overbearing, that I should not be educated, that I should dress modestly, that I should not express my sexual desires, that I am nothing but a pretty face, that I am just a sexual object, and that I cannot do what men can. Racially, because I am black, people think I’m uneducated, violent, unworthy, unreliable, lazy, untrustworthy, that I am on welfare, that I live in the inner city, that I am a criminal, and that I don’t belong here in America, and that I don’t deserve to be treated like a human. I think that these sort of biases come from personal experiences, the news, and just culture in general. If anyone said these things about me either directly to me or to someone else, I would be very hurt, angry, and upset, and I would definitely want to try and change that person’s perception about…

We usually only recognize bias in others but not ourselves. We are more aware of it when we have experienced that some people may be biased for or against us based on a stereotype. I have my biases and stereotype that I have absorbed from family, culture, and environment when I was young. Stereotype is a form of classification process to help analyzing, filtering the most important information, and to make the decision process faster. When working with the families and children, I have to be aware of my own biases because it will influence the judgment and expectation.…
