Masses of viewers fail to notice the absence of diversity not only on screen, but don't contemplate the individuals behind the camera as well. Although, several individuals think roles are evenly distributed; in fact, diversity is desired in the entertainment business as a whole. Senior Vice President of original programming for UP Network, Barbara Fisher says “There's not enough people pitching me series with diverse casts or diverse leads, so it's a great way for me to go back to our movies, which already have that, and use them as possibilities for expanding into series” (Umstead). Although several television networks are attempting to rectify the lack of diversity, actor J. August Richards believes the networks are doing it for the wrong reasons. One of those main reasons being the success of the hit FOX show Empire, which has one of the most diverse casts on television, networks are attempting to duplicate the success for themselves by mandating that each of their new shows must have a certain percentage of diversity. In this riveting interview Richards reveals his own personal thoughts on diversity in Hollywood, as well as networks trying to duplicate the success of shows instead of inventing original diverse works. “I think what Hollywood misses about diversity is, it’s not about appearance and it’s not about numbers… it’s about diversity of thought” (Avery & Bell). There is this idea circulating that real ethnic media portrayals are not profitable. In Jessica Hegehorn’s article, “Asian Women in Film: No Joy, No Luck,” she describes how the film, The Joy Luck Club, based heavily on Asian culture which featured an Asian cast still managed to be extremely profitable and its significance in American culture is still prevalent today. In order for there to be a clear representation of ethnicities in Hollywood, there needs to be varying ethnic people writing the stories, producing them, directing them, and portraying them to the public. This idea that true ethnicities without their stereotypes are not profitable because they will be uninteresting to the public is simply not true.…

1.3 Racial Diversity It would be completely incorrect to assume that the problem with female representation has been resolved. One cannot be supportive of feminism if it is only seen in one dominant ethnicity. The video that I chose is from this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, which celebrates works of excellence in the television industry. It’s Viola Davis’ acceptance speech after she won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a drama series. She became the first African-American women in the ceremony’s 67-year history to win in that category. She used this large platform as an opportunity to address the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry and what essentially stands in the way of women of color to be successful.…

Without Representation in Hollywood: The 2016 Oscars The faces that we see, hear and read about in entertainment greatly influence the shaping of American attitudes and beliefs. How minorities are portrayed in the entertainment industry often stereotype and reinforce negative of each ethnic group. The lack of diversity among the membership of entities and organizations that determine awards, such as the nominating committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, impacts how stories are covered and limits opportunities for ethnic minorities in these professions. This year Chris Rock hosted the 2016 Oscars and made several racial remarks. In doing so, it was hard to miss just how the lack of diversity was present this year.…

When a regular viewer tunes in the hit comedy show, Saturday Night Live, what might they examine on their screen? A viewer would be watching a comedy show with primarily young white men, some white women, and very few African Americans. There is a problem with the low levels of diversity within Saturday Night Live, otherwise called SNL. Since the show’s beginning, Saturday Night Live has had a very long history with not displaying actors from a variety of races and backgrounds. I, Hannah Rabitoy, head writer for SNL, am writing to the executive producer, Lorne Michaels, to address this issue of diversity and to suggest what must be implemented in the future to solve this issue.…

Colored actors are easily found in television and films today but are poorly recognized for their brilliant work and are only recognized because of the white actors that are co-stars or screenwriters. Gay and lesbian couples are starting to pop up every now and then in the media and the shows that they are in are some of the most popular shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Fosters, and Modern Family but they are stereotyped as the two popular girls who are experimenting or the men who dress really well and talk with high voices. Transgender characters are very new to the media and although they are scarce they are needed and loved when they do appear in shows like Orange is the New Black. Having representation is very important for young men, women and others that are trying to find who they are and live their lives to the fullest and the media is where people find their role models and inspirations so when a large group of people are represented it is a huge setback for the newer…

Generally, when an entertainer receives an award like an Oscar, they earn more job opportunities and can build a higher salary by reason of having experience and awards for your work, but for black people even if they have those successes it is still difficult for them to move forward. Black entertainers don’t receive numerous awards therefore it becomes difficult for them to find jobs in entertainment and make an exceptional salary from it.…

Hollywood misrepresents Asians by placing racially stereotyped characters and place a Non-Asian actor to fill in Asian roles in films, which creates false depictions of Asians and Asian cultures. In the film industry, Casting Directors hire popular Non-Asian actors than Asian actors just solely based off of popularity. The community of Asians face hardship because of racial stereotype being depicted in the wide-screen. Without an abundance of Asians in the Media, Asians can not be represented properly because of the lack of Asians casted in Hollywood films and TV shows. Asian Actors can not receive roles because of producers casting Non-Asians actors, which leads to “Yellow Face”.…

When I finished reading the 2016 article, “Here is why Hollywood also has an LGBT diversity issue” by current film reporter for the Los Angeles Times Tre’vell Anderson, it was no surprise that there is very little diversity regarding LGBT people. In the article, he points out of the very few LGBT movies released the year prior there were was only 25.5% that were LGBT people of color in them. To me, it makes sense that they have a problem representing LGBT people of color when they already have a problem of representing straight people of color. The reason I choose this article for my research is because it's important to know that diversity in media matters, especially when representing two minority groups.…

Representations of non-dominant identities in broadcast television have been on the rise in recent years. Along with these increased representations, comes the careful navigation of avoiding inaccuracies and making generalizations, sitcoms are no exception to this. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation are the product of showrunner and co-creator Mike Schur (Evans). These two shows do exceptionally well with the inclusion of diverse cast members and main characters, they reflect how diversity can be celebrated on TV without being exploited. However, the quality of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s inclusion of non-dominant identities surpass those of it’s sister show Parks and Rec.…

While more films include characters of colour in the background, most casts remain exclusionary. These films still show the cultural stereotypes that were implemented more than a century ago. Unless the film requires casting POC, the first person Hollywood seems to cast is 99% of the time white. In the last decade thousands of films have chosen not to cast actors of colour. Some films that did this include Aloha, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Prince of Persia, and Argo (Nahaar).…
