Sarah’s Key is the story about two girls in two different time periods. The book starts in the view of Sarah Starzynski during the time of 1942. Sarah, her mother, and father were collected during the roundup of the Jews July 16, 1942. The French police came barging into Sarah’s home making sure her and all the other Jews were taken. The Starzynski family, besides the brother, were taken to an interment camp in France. This was the holding place before being sent to Auschwitz. Soon Sarah’s mother and father were separated from her. Sarah’s parents were sent to Auschwitz and Sarah was soon to follow. Sarah finally escaped and found shelter with a nice elderly couple a few miles away from the camp she was imprisoned in.
The other female leading role is that of an American journalist that lives in Paris, Julia Jarmond. Julia’s story takes place in modern day Paris 2002. Julia is assigned the task of writing an article commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the Vel’ d’Hiv, the roundup of the Jewish families in France. The book takes place in France. Both Sarah and Julia speak French. There are parts of the book where French is spoken. On page 46 when the piano teacher across the street from Sarah begins to sing, the words on the page are in French, “Sur le pont d’Avignon….”. Also since Julia is American she speaks English most of the time. Also, her daughter Zoe is both French and American and Julia was determined to have her speak both French and English fluently. Sometimes the other French people in the novel have a hard time speaking English, as it is not their native
