I remember this feeling when I volunteered to become a link leader and help incoming freshman make a smooth transition to high school. Looking around the room I could see a wave of young nervous teenagers from all different backgrounds, and it was my responsibility to make them all feel at home in their new High School. As I talked to small groups of freshman, we all learned more about each other. It was amazing watch them learn that they all had more in common with each other, and I also humbled myself by remembering what it was like to be a freshman and that these kids weren’t much different than me. I have also had similar experiences as a captain of the cross country team. As captain I encouraged cross countries runners from private schools to come practice with my public school team. AH, WHAT A MESS. DIVERSITY, that is. Before I launch into a preview of all the intertwined issues that make diversity such a misdirected drama, I’ll start with a simple question: Is diversity a good idea done wrong, or a bad idea done just right? As I will make clear throughout this book, there is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of diversity, and in fact as an idea it evokes tremendous promise. The problem therefore must lie in the execution and in the application, and that indeed is pretty much the central message of this whole book.…

For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…
