For years, the media industry has had an extremely significant influence within society and has shaped modern culture. As the technology industry continues to grow, and we gain more information about the world through various media sources, it is crucial to continue to diversify the field. Diversity in the media industry is important, not only because representation matters, but also because it leads to greater productivity and opens future doors for people of color.

As a child, my surroundings had a significant impact on aspirations. Seeing family members and friends, as well as other African-American females on public platforms, shaped my thoughts about my future career. Representation is particularly important in the media industry because most people gain a perspective about the world around them through television, films, social media and newspapers. Not only does representation inspire people of color who hope to work in the field of media, it also affects the how the entire job market is portrayed to society.

Although diversifying general hiring practices is wonderful, the media industry must also take a step to diversify executive management roles. It is disheartening to know that in 2017 television and film executive management is 90% white. Such a composition cannot possibly be productive in representing the voices of people of color within the media industry. Promoting diversity on an executive level is crucial to ensuring that companies within the media industry stray away from racial uniformity. Corporations will find that when they diversify their administrative leaders they will have the power to enact widespread long-term internal changes that will diversify the media industry in a more efficient
