In regards to race and ethnicity, predominantly white campuses often work hard to recruit students of color to make their campus more diverse but their retention rates are significantly low (Dias-Bowie, Greenberg, Klukken, Pollio, Thomas, & Thompson, 2004). This is because predominantly white institutions tend to struggle with promoting a campus climate for racial/ethnic diversity because the administration tends to also be predominantly white and they are unable to understand the campus climate from a student of colors perspective (Hurtado, Milem, Clayton-Pedersen, & Allen, 1999).
