Ever since the immigration act of 1965 went into action, many foreigners came to Hawaii to seek for a better life. People left their homeland due to political, economical, and survival issues. Leaving their homeland by migrating to America was opening the door to opportunity. Since so many people of different ethnicities lived in Hawaii, the Hawaiian culture became diluted, which allowed other ethnicities to throw in a piece of their culture into the local culture. Due to Hawaii’s melting pot, The culture of Hawaii has evolved into one where various ethnicities gather together, but don’t fully blend, creating a whole new identity with their ethnicity and local society. The history books mainly focus on European development, excluding other races that helped carve out the US to what it is now. “Heaven knows how dismally historians fall short of their ideals; how sadly our interpretations are dominated and distorted by unconscious preconceptions; how obsessions of race and nation blind us to our own bias.” (schlesinger 12) They leave out how each race/culture contributed like the African Americans and how the civil rights act came to be. The books should be written as a critical analysis and not to boost someone’s self esteem. History books pertaining to Hawaii, talk about different cultures and their significance to the local culture. Stories and contributions of different cultures and ethnicities are counted. A Korean living in South Korea may view this behavior/value as disrespectful and disobedient. Koreans are very strict with Sunbae (Senior) and Hoobae (Junior) system which plays a big part in the Korean society. You are always taught to respect your seniors. Also, education plays a big part of the Korean culture and is always seen as the path to success. In Korea, you are expected to take care of your family until death. Even if you are married, it is common courtesy to take care of your family. Students who try to move away to college, are often looked down upon and are expected to look over their families even at a distance. If a child gets a job, some of that money is expected to go towards their
