Diversity Class Reflection

In this class, I learned about many different topics revolving around diversity. At the beginning of the class, we discussed the definition of culture according to Geertz’s definition. We discussed it as a web of meaning. In order words, we are the ones who have the ability to make and change our culture and to have an impact on each other. I read the article “You May Ask Yourself,” and it was a relief to find out that there is no such distinction as good or bad culture. In my opinion, this is a misconception for many people. People tend to stereotype others based on the culture they are in. For example, people who listen to classical music are considered as educated individuals and therefore they are considered as good people, and people who are listening to pop music are considered as uneducated individuals and therefore they are considered as bad people. Because people think that way, it was reasonable that they want to be friends with those that have the same common like as them, and become foes with those who do not. Therefore, I thought that this was a good discussion to start with because this encourages us as a students in diversity class to not only know each other, but also accept each other. I really appreciate when my professor took the class time to allow us to introduce ourselves to each other. Moreover, I like this activity when before we started our …show more content…
Invisible differences are issues and challenges that many different people face. These issues and challenges may be racism, addiction, human trafficking, homelessness, mental illnesses, and the list goes on. The reason why we discussed this is simply because to raise an awareness. We did this by forming ourselves into a book club group and at the mid-quarter we presented our chosen book to the class.
