EDAD 5355 Final Exam
Where did you begin in your understanding of diverse learning communities? Where are you now? Prior to taking this course, I already had a generalized knowledge of learning communities and the best practices to use to educate diverse learners. I have had the opportunity to work closely with our campus and district ESL coordinator. The change I have experienced is that this course allowed me to attain knowledge in relation to administration and diverse learning communities, which I did not have before. I had considered and addressed building these relationships within my classroom, but I had not had the opportunity to apply them to an entire campus. I have grown in my definition of what diversity is while also gaining

I always thought I was very open, accepted the differences in others, and inclusive of all individuals no matter what they have or do not have in common with myself. Although I still feel this is true, I found myself reflecting on how much diversity I have in my own life and relationships. The main aspect that I noticed about myself was that I do not have many friends that are diverse in race or sexual orientation. It is not that I do not want a variety of friends, I just do not live in a community where there is a lot of racial diversity or diversity sexual orientation. I am going to ensure to foster more long lasting friendships and continue to increase my understanding on racial and sexual orientation diversity and their needs. Secondly, I am going to ensure to spread the knowledge I have and apply it in personal circumstances including the discussions and interactions I have with peers and other individuals. This will allow for me to gain increased personal knowledge and experience, while also learning from others and gaining their applicational …show more content…
I would attain the opinions, ideas, and thoughts from each individual. I would also have families and community members take a survey in order to gain their knowledge. Additionally, I would have staff members survey students to gain their feelings and thoughts. Next, I would take all the surveys and compile the data. Once completed, I would view the data with the assistant principal and counselor to form a game plan. If we are still needing additional views, I would ask other administrators and individuals for their thoughts. Once a non-finalized game plan is created, I would hold a meeting to discuss it with all staff members and stakeholders. I would want to have an open communication line during the meeting so we can all collaborate to build the most effect diverse learning community possible. I would then take their ideas and thoughts and create a finalized plan, which would be shared with the campus when finished. Finally, I would have a culture night where families, community members, and stakeholders would be present to spread cultural knowledge and learn what are diver learning community will look like and seek to accomplish. This will allow for all individuals to be included in the educational environment and their thoughts would be heard and implemented in some fashion. New surveys would be sent out every few months to continue to adapt the environment to fit the needs of students and the

One of the most impactful moments of my young College experience was the result of one of my College Professors. She grew up where there was very little diversity, moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan at the young age of seven-teen, where she first experienced diversity. From her I learned, my many experiences of being open to people from different cultures and ethnicities are apart of why I am comfortable with all people from different backgrounds, and able to thrive in any environment or situation for which I am…

From attending a high school with over 4,000 students to attending a university with tens of thousand of students, and I’ve learned that there is always something new that you can learn from people. Everyone thinks differently, and everyone has something to offer to one another. People always say think outside the box, not to be narrow-minded, but to be able to imagine what’s outside the box you need the ability to think differently. And the only way to think differently is to be exposed to the different ways that people perceive the world. A commitment to diversity means always to strive to view the world in numerous ways, to never assume something because you can't think differently, and to always try to expose yourself to all the different people that surround us.…

By incorporating a diversity program on campus, it will afford an opportunity for students to work together with teachers, administrators and other community members in order to build supportive educational community. A diversity program will allow the minority populations such as ESL, SPED and others on campus to share their experiences in order to build a community that understands that we are all more alike than different. By partnering with parents and members of the community, I think a program could be developed that allows every culture the opportunity to…
