Diversity and it Influence on Nursing Practice
As nurses we have to be culturally competence to execute our duties and responsibilities in every setting. Cultural diversity is something that nurses have to learn and practice every day in their carrier especially when caring for their patient because, every individual or patient think, act and respond differently to different situation and level of care. Culture can be define as a way of life of a group of people such as, belief, behavior, values, customs that they accept and can be passed on from one generation to another. The purpose of this post is to talk about the influence of cultural diversity on nursing practice and to define and explain the following cultural terms, Cultural baggage, ethnocentrism, cultural imposition, prejudice, discrimination, cultural congruence and the importance of cultural self assessment, not leaving out the five steps in the process for delivering culturally congruent in nursing care and how it applied to my own practice. The following are definition of cultural terms in my own words: Cultural baggage refers to the tendency of one’s own culture to be present throughout their thinking, speech and behavior without them being aware of the pervasion. For instance cultural baggage is something we carry with us and we can express it to others at anytime unconsciously.
