Cultural Prejudice And Discrimination

When I was in elementary school, one of my classmates saw a woman in a hijab and stated that Muslims hated Christians and Jews. This was very confusing to me, as my grandmother was a very devoted Muslim; however, she had only ever preached love and taught me to respect others and their opinions. I didn’t say anything, and with the same sense of initial confusion, went home to ask my mother if Grandma really did hate Christians and Jews. My mother, readily equipped for such a question, explained prejudice to me in the terms a child could understand. She told me that often times, people feared difference because they didn’t understand it. Primarily, they are the only way to truly end discrimination. No individual should go through life discriminated against, and although the world is making progress, it is still not enough. It is only through exposure to a diverse environment that individuals can eliminate their prejudice. It is crucial society stops approaching differences with “tolerance” and rather than acceptance. Cultural differences are not an inconvenience expected to be tolerated, as they are so often taught to be. Perhaps the main reason for discrimination is that differences are considered inconvenient, and the status quo applauded for tolerating them. Within a diverse environment, there is nothing to tolerate, because there is no status quo. It thrives on acceptance and builds collective values, all with the core of open-mindedness. Thus we can conclude that diversity and inclusion are crucial in creating individuals with an open, accepting mindset. There are, however, further contributions to society besides character building. Diversity opens up new market opportunities within a community. We eat Italian pizza, drive German cars, wear Turkish clothes, and watch British TV. A diverse, colorful community is also a thriving community. Furthermore, a Forbes study has named workforce diversity and inclusion as an instigator for a thriving business, implying its contributions to the economy and the business
