Much has been said and written about parenting, as a whole is a complex role as it involves many personalities throughout different stages of a child’s life. For young parents, ways of parenting are much different than that of older parents. There’s also differences in parenting based on the number of children one may have. What may be acceptable for a younger child may not have been acceptable to an older child. In Elizabeth Stoke’s article, “I am a Helicopter Parent and I Don’t Apologize”, the author discusses her parenting style.…

The very essence of parenting can typically be summed up in archetypes consisting of people, with their own natural priorities, making decisions they think will best benefit their children in the long run. In the book Freakonomics, there are many issues that bring about discussion. While pondering on a topic that I felt I could best discuss, I looked back at chapter five in the book and decided to go with “What Makes a Parent Perfect?” Although this seems to be an easily answered question, many people have different insights on what really defines perfect parenting. When looking at a topic in the news that focuses on parenting, my attention was quickly directed to the Adrian Peterson case. Throughout my paper I will be discussing the chapter’s insights on perfect parenting, my view of perfect parenting, and Peterson’s feelings on perfect parenting.…

The uniqueness of the human character is one fascinating puzzle, riddled with pieces both ordinary and peculiar, which come together to form the complete picture. Some will say these characteristics of our being are innate, borrowed from our predecessors, while some will argue that we are the product of our upbringing and the environment in which we live. It was a wise man who said the truth is always somewhere in between, however, that wise man did not take into account the extraordinary compounding effect of various overt discriminating factors relating to race, gender, and socio-economic status impacting Caroline. The story told in the excerpt from Worlds Apart by Cynthia M. Given the human and technological resources available, parents and other caretakers adapt the customs and practices of child rearing – inherited and adapted ways of nurturing, entertaining, educating, and protecting the child – to the ecological and cultural settings in which they live (Super & Harkness, 1986). The most prominent caregiving figure in Keon’s life is his Grandma Grace, a 55 year-old social worker. Although it is customary for American children to have their mothers as primary caregiver, Jada’s (Keon’s mother and Grace’s daughter) prohibits her from fulfilling this role, and Grandma Grace fills this void. Grace exhibits behaviors that aim to nurture (working in order to provide for her family’s needs), entertain (allowing Keon to engage in outdoor play), educate (showing awareness of the academic program at Keon’s school and giving him time to do his homework), and protect (setting a curfew and limiting his interaction within their dangerous neighborhood) Keon.…

The life-span perspective posits that development cannot be understood solely in terms of genetics, but must include equal assessment of both nature and nurture. In this regard, three of the most important “nurture” influences are parents (and parenting styles), types of caregivers (including parental caregivers but not exclusive to them), and early educational experiences. In most circumstances, a child’s parent is one of his/her most important influences. As such, the way that the parent acts towards the child is important to understanding child development.…
