These individuals cannot express themselves or their interests. The only time that this is acceptable was very limited but in the novel Divergent, when Beatrice chooses which faction she wants to join once she turned eighteen years old. Although, once she chooses this fraction she has to stick with it, even if she wanted to change her mind or go be with her family.
Similarities with the romance that takes place with the main two characters represent the relationships between Winston with Julia and Tris with Tobias. All of them in love with their partners, they have no choice but to hide it from the rest of society. From faction leaders, to party member and to the thought police, the safety of a relationship simply does not exist. Unfortunately Winston and Julia fall out of love with one another and betray one another due to the torture they experienced. Tris and Tobias continued to love one another and risked everything including their safety. Divergent and 1984 both strip away an individual's personal identity including their thoughts and feelings. The society and governments are controlled and monitored and may never allow their people to be themselves. This coincidence of similarities between these books still lurk in readers minds and will continue to for many more years to
