Theme Analysis Paper

Even the bravest people have fear. Beatrice was born into Abnegation, but her aptitude test results show that she is Divergent! She tries to blend in by picking Dauntless, but Erudite is planning a war on Abnegation. Beatrice will have to stop Erudite and save Abnegation despite her fear. In Divergent by Veronica Roth, it shows that bravery does not mean an absence of fear.
Beatrice is brave in this novel. When Beatrice goes to take her aptitude test she had to drink a serum. When she finished her aptitude test Tori told Beatrice that her test was inconclusive and “People who get this kind of result are … Divergent.” (Roth pg 22) When Beatrice goes to the choosing ceremony to pick her faction she picks Dauntless because

Her friend Al jumped over the edge of the chasm and Tris wonders if he had any fear when he jumped. Eric the Dauntless leader said “ Albert was not yet one of our members, but we can be assured that he was one of our bravest.” (Roth pg 307-308) Tris was mad and exclaimed “He wasn't brave!” (Roth pg 308)Later Tris goes onto Four’s fear landscape and learned his real name is Tobias. Tobias’s dad tried to hit him with a belt in the simulation,but Tris was brave and took the hit.
Tris will learn what real bravery is. Eric and Jeanine team up and inject a serum into all the Dauntless, but Tris is immune to the serum! Tris pretends to be in the simulation like all the Dauntless. She gets on the train with Tobias and some others. He holds Tris’s had on the train so Tris knows he's Divergent! Tris’s mom is Divergent and tells her “Beatrice we have to run.” (Roth pg 439) They run and Tris’s mom gets shot and dies! Tris ran and her friend Will aimed a gun at her but Tris shoots him.
Divergent by Veronica Roth proves that bravery does not mean an absence of fear. Tris finds out she is Divergent and joins Dauntless. Her friend Al jumped into the chasm because he was scared. Tris stops Jeanine and the Dauntless simulations. Therefore Tris is brave just like millions of people therefore do what is right even if you are
