Media Essay – Analysis of Divergent

In this essay I will be analysing the film Divergent and the ways in which it links to Theory in Action. This essay will cover the links between Divergent and theories such as the Feminism Theory, Marxism, and Structuralism etc.

The first topic that I will be looking at is the genre of the film. Divergent can be linked to many genres due to the narrative but the main genres that it is categorised under are Action and Adventure. There are many ways in which we can relate Divergent to these genres by looking at different aspects of the film which matches the stereotypical values of an Action and/or Adventure film. She then goes on to explain the reason why they have factions, saying ‘They divided us into 5 groups, factions, to keep the peace’.
She then goes onto explain what each faction is and what the people in the faction have in common. “Eaudite are the smart ones who value knowledge, Amity are about kindness and harmony”, “Candoa value honesty and order”, “Dauntless are the protectors, solders, police. They’re brave, fearless and free”. “Abnegation, selfless, dedicated to helping other and public servants”. She explains that everyone knows where they belong, showing the audience that each person has a place that they fit under and everybody is categorised.
Overall, the film sequence is in completely chronological order. However, the opening scene of the boat that has been washed up is referenced to later on in the film which provides an explanation to the audience as to why they used this as the opening scene. Although when the scene with the boat is re-visited, it is not a flashback and is shown to be shot at the same time as the film, keeping the chronological order of the
