Beatrice Prior, a 16 year old girl from the faction, Abnegation, has to choose between staying apart of her original faction or switching to another faction. The inanities are told that they are to jump down, to what seems like an abyss of darkness. The instructor of the new Dauntless Initiates has given the option of someone volunteering, with Beatrice accepting. Beatrice goes the edge and jumps straight off, falling through the darkness. At the bottom, a man asks what her name is and to choose carefully because this is a start of a new life. Beatrice decides to rename herself Tris. Tris crosses a threshold here because there is no turning back. She knows that she will never go back to her old life, that Beatrice Prior is gone. From here Tris and the other initiates are told that not everyone will become a Dauntless. Each initiate will compete against each other in three categories. This is where Trish faces her supreme ordeal. She knows that she will have to fight and claw her way into becoming a Dauntless. Tris has to push herself to fight and to learn how to use weapons, all while being the smallest initiate. While learning to fight, Tris becomes friends with her instructor, Four. The two develop a love story, while he teaches her how to use her weakness as her strengths. He helps her learn how to fight, how to use a gun and knives, and teaches her how to believe in herself. Tris’s transformation happens one night when she is attacked by three other initiates. Her attackers try to throw her over a bridge, when Four saves her. From here, she knows that the others find her intimidating

Finding one’s true self poses a challenge to many, but in Veronica Roth’s Divergent, this journey is proven to be more difficult because of the dystopian society in which the protagonist lives. Upon learning that she is Divergent, Beatrice “Tris” Prior must choose one faction to reside in for the rest of her life. Through character, motif, and conflict, Roth creates a systemic society which strictly adheres to conformity, resulting in finding one’s true identity. Tris’ character aims to fit into society throughout the novel, and the literary element of character reveals the theme of self-identity. Her Divergence, however, makes this seemingly simple process more complicated for her.…

Shakespeare has complicated the gender roles between Viola and Sebastian by cloaking Viola as male, not only through her dialogue (and Sebastian’s as well) but through her persona. Shakespeare chooses this idea in his writing to flow the characterization of these two perplexing individuals who washed up on shore and focused on their arrival to Illyria. From the beginning of Twelfth Night when Viola discovers Illyria to when Sebastian is rescued by an intrigued sailor and brought to Illyria, both characters use expression in their dialogue that don’t fit their gender stereotypes to exaggerate…
