Divergent Experience

Decent Essays
Personal Essay Thinking back, the most ambiguous and yet completely divergent experience I had was when I set my foot on American soil. It wasn’t just some typical day for me, it was the day full of joy and excitement. It was the day when I was united with my family without having to fear that they’ll have to go soon. It was the day when I saw snow for the first time; sparkling from the light of the star that is closest to us. It was the day I was exposed to a completely different culture. And evidently, it was the day I asked myself, “Where am I?” - I felt like an infant who was exposed to the world for the first time as I absorbed all the information around me. And 2 years later, my high school journey began.

I’m biracial. That sentence took me a long time to accept. My entire life up to this point at age seventeen has always been about the question: who am I? What am I? As a half white, half chinese citizen of New Hampshire, fitting in took me a little more effort than the average person.…

The summer before middle school, a weird transitional time for most. This was when I went backpacking for the first time. My dad and I went to Manistee National Forest, which you can locate on your hand map a few centimeters lower than Lake Ann and covers a little more than a thumbs worth of space. I step out of my dad’s truck and everything felt right. The smell of damp earth and decaying leaves hits my nose, travels to my mouth, and creates a smile.…

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. While most of my family live in Baltimore, Maryland my father had already established himself in White Plains, New York a…

A Move to the South The loud noises of car screeching to a stop, train horn blaring, or police sirens flaring. The typical big city noises that everywhere gets woken up to at night was about to come to an end. North is very different from the South, so trying to adapt would be harder than I ever imagine. As a possible incoming student, who not only desires to, but needs to learn and attend a favorable campus, the things that I can offer and/or bring are my experiences and skills. I will try to help enrich the campus community as much as I can. Although, my experiences and interests may be easily overlooked by some because of the simple fact that I am “only seventeen,” and that everyone is still continuously evolving. I believe I can still bring something to only help enrich the community. A particular experience that I know differentiates from others is, being Hmong.…

Reluctantly stumbling through a sea of all different walks of life, I tightly held on to my clunky lunch box as it bumped into every new face I passed. I scrambled around the intimidatingly large campus of Cypress Bay High School searching for my classroom. “Excuse me, do you happen to know where the 300’s building is?” I asked in a shaken voice, but no one seemed to hear me. It was as if everyone spoke a different language that I did not understand.…

Stability was a luxury that I was never able to have. Between moving across the country every few years and barely being able to go to a single school for more than a grade, the thing I craved the most in my life was a steady group of friends and maybe a consistent pizza place to order from. It’s not like I was oblivious to how lucky I was. Travelling across the country was an experience that many people don’t get to have.…

The Plane Ride When I was nine my family started a move from the tranquil suburbs of San Jose, California to the desert city of Windhoek, Namibia, located in southern Africa. My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. All of our possessions were sold off, including my much beloved toys, until everything we had could fit into eight large suitcases. These suitcases are what we carried to the airport as we prepared for our journey. I felt no small amount of apprehension and excitement in what lay ahead of me in the new country, but an event I would experience in the coming flight would forever change and shape my perspective of how I see the…
