Divergent: Dystopian Characteristics

Decent Essays
In Divergent, the main dystopian characteristic is that citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad. The reason is, in the factions, you must wear a particular color. You are also not allowed to do or say certain things. For example, Erudite wears blue, Abnegation- gray, and Dauntless- black. People from Candor can not tell any lies. In the book, before the aptitude test Tris groups people thinking ¨ They are laughing and shouting and playing cards. At another set of tables, the Erudite chatter over books and newspapers, in constant pursuit of knowledge. At the Abnegation table, we sit quietly and wait.¨

Truly, during Dauntless initiation, the initiates have to earn their way in; people get cut out

Examples of an over controlling government are shown on just the first page of the book.…

Dystopias are commonly referred to as an imagined place in which everything is unpleasant. There are different ways for a society to become a dystopia, which is the antonym of a utopia or imagined community/society that possesses highly desireable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens; there are also many ways for films, literature, and other arts to allow us to experience these so called dystopian societies. Animal Farm,by George Orwell, is a typical anti-utopia because the animals of the book overrun the humans to form a “perfect world” yet their plight results in a society worse than the one they tried to escape. Interstellar, although also a dystopian society example, is not the average dystopia in the sense that the environment…

People in this world started to burn books because perhaps they held something that they didn’t like, and so the book burning culture began.…

Dystopian literature is important because warns us of the possible future we as a society can potentially face, and sometimes informs us ways we could avoid it. There’s certain motifs in stories that can demonstrate information about parts of a dystopian societies. Two common motifs that fit “The Pedestrian” written by Ray Bradbury and “Back to the Future 2” directed and written by Robert Zemeckis. would be corporate control and a dystopian protagonist because both societies seem to be controlled by people with a lot of money, both have people getting severely punished over little things by higher ups, a protagonist who wants things to go back to the way they were, and the protagonist feels like an outcast because how much they dislike the way things work in the society they live in.…

Today’s government is flawed, it is not perfect and neither are the people under it, but the government situation that we have today is not even close to the troublesome governments that are found in the dystopian novels 1984 and Brave New World. The term utopia describes a world that is filled with peace and happiness. A dystopia, on the other hand is a world filled with manipulation, controlling government, and sadness. In Huxley’s Brave New World he shows the reader his idea of a futuristic dystopia where babies are born in bottles and the citizens are taught their morals through sleep teaching. Bernard is a character who feels like he doesn't fit into the society that he has found himself in.…
