Divergent, a series written by Veronica Roth, is about a girl who grows up in a futuristic society ran by leaders. The book is set in a rural part of Chicago where society is split into five different factions: Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the honest). The society is ran by Abnegation. When the children enter adulthood, they must choose one of the factions. The main character, Tris, strays from her Abnegation family, and picks Dauntless. When picking factions, the teens have to go through testing and initiation. During testing, the leaders of the faction inserts a chip into your neck to control the way you think and do things. The teens have to go through a simulation to test their skills and see if they picked the correct …show more content…
When Tris finishes her simulation, her results and inconclusive and she is labeled as Divergent. Being Divergent means that the person does not fit in one specific faction. In this society, being Divergents are outcasts and will be executed if found. The teens trying out for Dauntless have to go through initiation. Only ten will be picked and the rest will be factionless (homeless). Initiation includes fighting, weaponry, and capture the flag. Tris meets Tobias, a Dauntless leader, who is also a hidden Divergent. A love interest is sparked in between them and with this, their Divergent secrets become threatened when the Erudite leader suspects their suspicious behavior. Erudite begins to take power and comes in conflict with the Divergent. Major conflict and war are a result in this in the following books, Allegiant and
