Here at ODU, there is an organization specifically for students with a passion for scuba diving called the Sea Lions dive club. The dive club is an amazing opportunity for students who want to become talented, professional scuba divers. The purpose of dive club is to teach rising divers new techniques, have the opportunity to socialize with other ambitious divers, receive their PADI diving certification (a necessity for open water diving in America), provide the chance to participate in many different fundraisers & events to help raise money for specific causes that relate to preserving our ocean & beaches, and many more. Dive club meetings are held in the Student Recreation Center, which is located in the heart of the Quad dorm buildings. Each meeting is made up of either discussions about upcoming events and diving news from around the world, a physical diving lesson, or both. The physical underwater lessons are typically held in the SRC pool, where a group of divers go underwater and learn new tricks or techniques, normally dealing with equipment handling while submerged underwater. Occasionally, dive club will make a trip to Lake Rawlings located in Chesapeake to do more complicated dives in the lake. Throughout the school years, dive club hosts many trips, fundraisers, and events (sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Dive Center). This year, dive club is taking a cruise trip to Nassau, Bahamas to complete up to 10 open water dives off the cruise ship and also dive with sharks. I applied during the summer and was accepted almost immediately, and have been a member for 3 months now. Dive club provides not only all necessary materials to pursue the student’s dream as a diver but also provides lifelong friendships and helps students break out of their shy shell and meet new people with the same passion. This opportunity is incredible, and for me, it has provided an outstanding experience that will continue to help me as well as others grow as divers, and learn how to conserve and properly explore our beautiful oceans, rivers, and
