Disturbed Sleep Pattern and Depression Disturbed sleep pattern is defined as “time-limited interruptions of sleep amount and quality, due to external factors” (Doenges, Moorhouse, & Murr, 2013). Insomnia is a sleep disturbance that many patients (of all ages) with depression deal with. The purpose of this paper is to prove that a patient’s disturbed sleep pattern can predict the onset of a Major Depressive Disorder. An article “RCT OF CBT-I FOR COMORBID INSOMNIA AND DEPRESSION” is a study that was performed on 41 subjects, both male and female, ages 18- 64. This Study was to determine if Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia initiated by a therapist, compared with written material for self- help, reduces insomnia and severity of depression. “This research determined that insomnia and depression are highly comorbid conditions. 67% of individuals with a Major Depressive Disorder also meet the criteria for chronic insomnia. Insomnia used to be considered a symptom of Major Depressive Disorder, that was thought to develop following the onset of a Major Depressive Disorder, did not require specific treatment, and would resolve with effective treatment of the depressive symptoms. New evidence shows first that 40- 69% of people with a Major Depressive Disorder reported insomnia was present before any other depressive symptoms.
