District Twelve Journal Analysis

The first journal that caught my attention and fit the category of “a personal response to a theme/topic in the novel” was providing a narrative which exemplifies my relationship with my best friend: the fourth journal entry. The reason why I chose this specific journal is because it really tackled the personal experience I once had with my former relationship and how it tied in with knowledge and beliefs. My interpersonal relationship with my former best friend resembled a certain situation that the characters in the book discussed; in both instances, both of us changed our views on seeing the advantages and disadvantages of a problem and seeing what consequences come with each side. For this specific analysis for the novel, I picked the setting analysis of the district where our protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, lives. I believe this journal really exemplified the ideas of knowledge and imagination. By using an imaginary setting, it makes us think about how it can be narrowed back into reality. The imaginary setting, District Twelve, is presented as having “squat grey houses” to “black cinder empty streets” (page. 4). By these features alone, it’s not hard to imagine the setting to be a weary, dark place where gloominess takes over the lives of the district’s citizens. Meanwhile, Katniss mentions, “District Twelve. Where you starve to death in safety (page. 5).” The quote alone illuminates the thought of the setting being unsafe towards the citizens; generally speaking, they’re forced in an oligarchy government. The rich prevail, making all laws and regulations, while the poor sit and watch as the rich take them to their own advantage. Although these settings are imaginary, they can be used to explain the world around us. Oligarchy governments was common around the world; the settings used in the book can spark knowledge within the reader, showing that the locations can be prevalent in our real world. Places like District Twelve show us new understandings that the rich can unfortunately

Homicide is a topic that many shy away from. Truman Capote, however, takes on the topic with full force in his novel, In Cold Blood. In this work, Capote details the events that occurred before and after the unsuspecting murders of the Clutter household. The family murder transpired in the small Kansas town of Holcomb, after their murderers, two convicted felons, had heard a false rumor while in prison about Herb Clutter and hoped to rob him and his family of their money. Capote utilizes a variety of rhetorical devices to convey his complex perspective of Holcomb.…

According to Drugs, Society, and Criminal Justice, outlaw motorcycle gangs and street gangs have been credited as the two types of organized crime in America since the 1980's (Levinthal, 2012). However, both criminal organizations have various gangs that are identifiable by crimes they commit, how they are committed, and where they are committed, just as each gang has their friends and foes. " Gang members who sell drugs are significantly more violent than gang members who do not sell drugs and are more violent than drug sellers who do not belong to gangs", (Levinthal, 2012, p. 107).…

I chose the "Now We Can Begin": What's Next? essay written by Crystal Eastman. The purpose of this essay was for the author to write about women’s freedom and show how women were not treated as equals when compared to men. I believe the thesis statement in this article was, “Now they can say what they are really after; and what they are after, in common with all the rest of the struggling world, is freedom” (Eastman). Lay out the structure of the reading to the class, and let the class know if this structure is organized and logical (you may claim that it is not organized – it’s up to you).…

When one is separated from those they are supposed to be closest with, they will often look to fill that emotional gap with some form of self expression of comfort. As in Cisneros’ personal essay “Ghosts and Voices: Writing from Obsession”, the distance I lived from my family, both literally and metaphorically, helped to shape myself and my voice. Since both my parents originally hailed from Montreal, the majority of my family remains there to this day. While I am quite close with everyone, there has always been a gap between our existences. Furthermore, being the only openly LGBTQ+ member of my family served to form a greater divide between myself and my inherently Irish Christian loved ones.…

Tommi Christoff HUM 1020 Journal #11: A Separation A Separation ends with Termeh having to decide whether she’s going to live with her mother or father. She said she had made up her mind, but did not want to say it in front of her parents, and so they both left the room—and then the film ended. I believe the screenwriter of the film left it with an open ending because throughout the entire film it was a constant battle for Termeh having to choose between living with Simin or Nader. The ending left it open for us to decide which parent she’ll choose, and while that kind of sucks, it is also cool to create an ending for the film.…

Writing journal entries helped me connect the past with the present and I was able to take the extra step to make every thought meaningful. Among having so much work to do and being busy every second along with constant anxiety and stress, I do not have time to stop and think. These journal entries help me think and debrief myself and I think the entries definitely benefited in class discussions. When we do not do journal entries before discussing I have noticed that our conversations are less thought out and are answers are not profound. When we do our journal entries are conversations have tended to be continuous and open.…

Analyzing is the biggest teaching method I have use to teach my students strategic actions for expanded thinking. I feel like the elementary teachers does such a great job of teaching the students about predicting that it does come “natural” for students to predict once they hit the middle school years. Therefore, I like to dig in deeper with my students and we do a lot of analyzing the stories. We analyze plot structure, literacy devices, points of view, how the author is conveying his/her messages, etc. According to Fountas and Pinnell, “By closely examining texts, readers not only better understand the meaning but also gain insights into the writer’s craft, which contributes to their own writing ability” (Fountas & Pinnell, p. 59).…

“If they would rather die…they had better do it and decrease the surplus population.” -Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol From the words of Ebenezer Scrooge, one can see that the rich and the greedy are heartless to the poor. Charles Dickens shows how the rich and powerful did not care about the poor and like Scrooge, they wanted them to die, so London would not be so crowded. The world of Charles Dickens is best understood, through his own life, industrialized London, and scriptures concerning the poor.…
