District 9 And Avatar: A Comparative Analysis

The Science fiction genre is always developing. Looking at District 9 and Avatar (both released in 2009) we can say that some elements of each are more evolved than others but as a whole they are equally evolved, and very similar in many ways.

Science fiction has certain key teachers or themes. Such as improbable settings, aliens, futuristic scenarios or an alternate history, space, travel, advanced technology as well as they way it is filmed including special effects. These are what is typical and for science fiction to be considered evolved it would have to push these boundaries and challenge the norm.

It is for this reason that it can be said District 9 and Avatar are equally evolved. Both are set in improbable settings. District 9 being

Avatar looks to a possible future where mantas made a mess of the earth and has come to a new planet for resources. Again this is not an evolved concept as we see many movies show earth as being a dystopia as well as humans leaving earth, and example of this is the 2008 movie Wall-E. This concept is a norm is the genera. Space travel is another norm. In District 9 we don’t see any space travel, what we do see is the aliens have traveled to earth. In Avatar the humans are seen traveling to Pandora, this trip takes several years. It can therefor be said that Avatar has more evolved space travel, however we can credit that to the fact that it is set in the future. We can say it is more advanced as we humans travel to a new planet which it takes roughly five years and ten months during this times humans are entered into a Cryogenic sleep. Although the space travel is more advanced in Avatar than in District 9, it can not be said it has evolved the science fiction genera as Star wars has even more advanced space travel with the hipper jump, and the idea of Cryogenic sleep used in Avatar can be see in the 1986 movie 2001: a space …show more content…
In District 9 the aliens are more advanced, they can travel in space and have highly advanced weapons. In Avatar the humans come with the superior technology, including space travel and weapons. In these films we can actually find very similar types of weaponry such as the body suits. However, again it has not evolved science fiction as similar or even more advanced technology can be seen in other movies of this genera, such as the artificial intelligence found in 2001: a space odyssey. There is however an area in Avatar that is superior to District 9 and that is the SGI special effects, animation and filming of Avatar. The over all spectacular of Avatar or Mise-en-scene was extremely evolved and super to anything done before. Avatar took several years to make and won several awards including Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. District 9 had got the old school type style with a documentary style that used hand held cameras and a dystopian setting.

This can also be attributed to the budget for these movies. Avatar had a significantly bigger budget than District 9. That is why they could make the spectacular they did. Faking this to consideration we could argue that it evolved film as a whole, regardless of genera. It is for this reason it couldn’t be conceded to have evolved science fiction in particular.

Based of the balance of evidence provided it can be considered that District 9 is not more evolved than Avatar as

In conclusion, the latest film ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ (2014) has advanced in motion picture (CGI), which made the film more realistic and fitted into pop culture. It also captured audience’s eyes in some scenes and brought to light modern society conditions relating to human corruptions. The original ‘Planet of the Apes’ (1968) script structure was not creditable and lost interest throughout the storyline, such as visual effects (CGI) and lack of performance, which lead to a parody genre film rather then being a serious science fiction genre film. There were also some unneeded characters and other storytelling methods to present the narrative because it bored the audience and made it more of a Mockumentary. The twist conflict at the…

Burton’s Uniqueness Through Films We as humans were not created to live in sameness. The aching thought of every living being looking, acting, and thinking exactly alike is nearly unfathomable, predominantly because it is so far-fetched from the world in which we live. Thankfully, each individual (humans in particular) that inhabits Earth will without a doubt always be created to be unique. All brought into existence with different sets of skills and personalities, some of which are used to bring forth some of the most mind-boggling projects such as movies/films, and forms of entertainment alike, that invoke a series of emotions from audiences that stretch far and wide.…

Gothic literature of the nineteenth century echoed the repressed fears held by individuals of the ideas introduced in the Enlightenment like an exhale. Tales of mad scientists dominated literature like a mirror into America’s psyche. In the early twentieth century filmmakers coincidentally, or intentionally caught onto the repressed fears individuals held in regards to the advancement of science and the decline of religion, and created a horror film empire on the topic. Upon the development of sound in horror films, what is remembered as the classic period was born. From 1931 to 1936, there was a trend in horror cinema which featured mad scientists, comprising over half of the horror films of the classic period.…

Creation versus evolution is a world renowned topic that has been argued upon for an extended period of time, by a wide collection of people. There are many people with very different facts on each, but in the end it is still an ongoing debate. Scholars for Creationism have their arguments, but scientists also have their arguments. There are things that have resemblance for both, but they can’t seem to come up with a compromise of where the first atom came from.…
