Your friend just sent you a pic of there cat on the roof, while your typing a comment, BOOM! You got hit by a car and broke both your legs and are sprawled out on the street that you wandered in not knowingly. Distracted walking has become a serious and dangerous problem in the United States. Some people think the solution is to make it illegal. Others think there shouldn’t be a law on it. What I think about this is to add a law on texting while walking on the street or sidewalk, to make it safer to walk on the streets.

In the article Cellphone dangers for walkers by Jodi Mohrmann it discusses that people that text and walk while on cellphones are becoming just as dangerous as people who text and drive, often walking into streets or walking into others. The researchers say that from 2005 to 2010 the number of accidents that have happened from walking and texting have doubled, and that the number of emergency room visits is on the rise. I chose this article because researchers from the university of Ohio state suggest that manufacturers create a cellphone that locks during moments of movement. I disagree with this suggestion, and believe it is an unnecessary on the fact that people just need to be more aware of their surrounds, focusing more on what they hear and see.…

Although texting and walking is harmful, some may argue that there are other solutions to this problem. In England, some lampposts have been padded to soften the blow for walkers who run into them with their cell phones. Although this is a creative solution, it costs a lot of money to pad all of those lampposts and isn’t effective. This is another reason why texting and walking should be banned.…
