Everyone already knows that distracted driving is very risky, but Virginia Tech proved just how risky it can be. They used radars, sensors, and cameras to collect data from 3,500 drivers over a three-year period and documented 1,600 crashes and 905 severe crashes. From observing video evidence they found that the most common distracted methods that led to a crash were using a cell phone, reading or writing, reaching for an object, using vehicle technology, driving while highly emotional, fatigue, and interacting with an adult or teen passenger. Upon further examination, it was discovered that 68% of the severe crashes involved some type of observable distraction.
