Distracted Driving Research Paper

Introduction Motor vehicles are a common mode of transportation to travel to work, school, and social activities. Vigilance in visual, auditory, and tactile senses are necessary to safely arrive at each destination. There are many distractions that may hamper these senses such as mobile phone usage while driving. The utilization of cell phones while driving ranges from hand holding to wireless free talking, texting, posting on social media or using apps. This habit temporarily distracts the driver, taking their full attention off the road and onto their mobile device. These distractions include glancing at the phone, taking one hand off the wheel to pick up the phone, and responding to a text or post that disrupts mental concentration on the driving task. This is a problem since the driver has removed their attention from driving while the vehicle is still in full motion. Texting and mobile phone devices are prevalent, trendy, and continually growing in today’s society with heavy use in the new driver teenage population leading to motor vehicle accidents. Teenage drivers are notorious for being heavier users of technologies and incorporating them into all facets of their lives, including driving.
