In 2008 Jennifer Smith’s mom was killed in an accident that was caused due to distracted driving from the other driver. The driver that caused the accident had a clear record up until the accident occurred. The driver was so sidetracked that he could not even recall the lights color when asked to do so.
April is the month dedicated to raising awareness about distracted driving, making people more aware of the dangers it has on themselves and other drivers on the road, and hopefully making it to where the number of fatalities and injuries drop drastically year-round. Distracted driving comes from numerous different factors, some being: eating, music, passenger, but most importantly, phones. Currently, the same thing is trying to happen with distracted driving but, it seems as if the numbers are just increasing more. From 2005 to 2009 the percentage of fatalities from distracted driving has jumped from 10% to 16% and the percentage of injuries is at 20%. The issue at hand is that there are laws being created but, the steps that must be followed to enforce the laws make it difficult. For example, for an officer to pull somebody over for texting and driving he must see the driver doing so for several second and must ensure the driver was not just looking down.
This article relates to the rational choice theory because “the framework emphasizes all important factors that go into a person’s decision to engage, or not to engage, in a particular act,” (Schram and Tibbetts, 2018, pg. 96). This goes along with distracted driving because the individual makes the conscious decision on their own to engage in texting and driving making he/she a distracted driver and a danger to others
