Distracted Driving Advertisement: Think Of Both Sides

There are lots of public service advertisements coming out every year and most of them are forgotten by the public after some time. However, there is one advertisement that sticks out to me: a distracted driving advertisement from Russia called “Think of Both Sides”. This particular ad was first created for the government of Ekaterinburg, a city in Russia that has around a million residents. Although it was originally aimed to be used in Russia, it became international and was used for many other websites and organizations because traffic-related fatality is a severe problem all over the world. According to the World Health Organization, or WHO, traffic-related deaths in Russia is 27,025 in the year of 2013. The situation gets even worse when …show more content…
The publishers merely want to raise awareness, and hopefully to stop distracted drivers from being on the road. There is a line of captions in the bottom of the ad saying that “the number of car accidents involving children increases during school holidays”. As an ad published by a credible government official, there is no need to doubt the accurateness of the stats. Also, the captions especially address the effect of distracted driving on children instead of generally talking about the distracted driving issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1168 children under 14 losing their lives in traffic-related accidents and 169000 children get injured so that it is a problem that worth mentioning and resolving. By being this specific about children that are injured or killed in car accidents, the publishers successfully make the drivers more cautious when driving than they would have been before. Since a large portion of drivers are parents and definitely don’t want their child to be injured, they will be able to retain the information better and pay more attention when driving with a specific fact that accidents happen more often in holiday seasons than if it were much more …show more content…
The composition of the ad draws the attention and color scheme and captions appeal to people’s emotions, convincing people not drive while distracted and leaving the space for people to have their own thinking and interpretation. The strategic thinking behind this ad is brilliant and the widespread of this ad is the best proof. Although it begins as an ad sponsored by a city’s official in Russia, it has made its way across the world, and onto different websites to raise awareness for distracted driving. The color scheme, diction, and the tone collaborate and all contribute to the success of this ad. If the ad corrects the little logical issue and improves the details, it would be rather perfect. Distracted driving has been a major reason for traffic accidents for a long time. Besides constantly reminding drivers and pedestrians, we can also expect the improvements in technologies. During the last decade, the number of traffic accidents and traffic-related fatalities has been drastically reduced thanks to the development of different kinds of sensors and active safety technologies implemented on more and more cars.
