Filtered listening is one form of distorted listening. When the helper stops hearing the person and starts personal, familial, sociological and cultural filters they introduce forms of bias into their listening. Being bias can distort what the helper is hearing and makes them become one sided, or jaded preventing them from actively hearing the client and possibly developing a prejudices towards the client.
