Narratives It was always hard to say goodbye to her. Each time, I thought, would be the last. She held up well until the car left the curb and I could see her shuffling up to her door reaching for her handkerchief from the pocket of her frock. I am sure she thought she was in the clear to finally release the tears while she rounded the corner of the walk into her doorway. She did not know my eyes locked onto her every move through my own water-filled lids. Somehow this once strong woman, was tiny and fragile. A block down the road, we realized I had left my coat in her guest room. It was bitter-sweet since I was guaranteed another hug, but the cost would be the heartache of walking away once more. As I ran up to the door I could see her sobbing …show more content…
The Ohio State University has created a program, Project Narrative, in which is dedicated to the study in the “distinctive nature of narrative and its various structures, elements, uses, and effects” (The Ohio State University, n.d.). Narratives have been and are becoming immensely valuable in understanding humanity. These new studies are drawing from environments, for instance, courtrooms, conference rooms and doctor’s offices. These narrative theorists are studying”how stories help people make sense of the world, while also studying how people make sense of stories” (The Ohio State University, n.d.). One worthwhile example to mention is the journal article, Showing and Telling Asthma: Children Teaching Physicians with Visual Narrative (1999). This project was initiated to give children a “voice” in their own health care and to be heard by the adults who could make some difference in their everyday challenges revolving around their chronic and invasive health issues and enable health care providers to better understand and treat these children (Richab & Chalfen, 1999, p. …show more content…
Consider a sequence of fourteen photographs showing a small dog in a body of water by a bridge, a frantic dog parent leaning through the bridge rails helplessly looking down. The brief version is; the little pup was saved by a courageous bystander and soggily returned to the relieved owner (M, 2010). Each static image, however, brings so much more narrative as the brain can interpret the emotion of the woman in fear of losing her companion. Our brains fill in those blanks and they can mean different things to each mind through the individual filters of memory and experience. Some may not be as touched in their particular narrative while others may flashback with similar losses or scares and be overcome with passion. Likewise, other still images can tell horrific stories as our brains fill in the missing words and puzzle pieces. The 2013 photo contest reveals many stories left to the viewer to create their own narrative (World Press Photo, n.d.). Blood stained floors, a child crying on a hospital table, guns, smoke a floating body and other various photos show realities without captions, leaving the observer to complete the plot, if they can gaze for any

O'Brien uses this technique in The Things They Carried, while also explaining through the use of metafiction why people do this. "The pictures get jumbled; you tend to miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal seemingness, which makes the story seem untrue, but which in fact represents the hard and exact truth as it seemed" (pg. 78). Sometimes things happen to us so quickly, that when we tell the story, it isn't exactly right when it does come down to the cold hard facts, but it as true as anything that we will ever know. Stories are not totally fact, but with interpretation they can lead us to factual events that do occur.…

This is my first year of high school, and so far I am enjoying this year more than any of my previous years in elementary school at Aviston Elementary. In the past years, I was a stressed out loner who was easily annoyed by everything and could not get long-term projects done without having a melt down at some point. However, in this year that has changed. I have made a few friends who have stayed with me for the entire year, learned to tolerate immature, childish actions, and have not felt completely overwhelmed to this date. This year and previous years both had their moments, but I would not change anything that happened because they both helped make me who I am now.…

With the rise of new ailments and the recurrence of the old ones, the field of healthcare never ceases to seek new approaches for the improvement of the delivery of medical assistance to the general public. An efficient health care service requires the full participation of the people concerned. However, this ideal is usually not met. When there is weak or no established relationship between a physician and his patient, distance is created and their interactions are limited, which may hinder the development of diagnostic and therapeutic processes. Medical practitioners have found a way to bridge this gap.…

Soon after our conversation Brad showed up with Pastor Otto and food. Normally we would have a choice on what we wanted to eat, but since it was so late the night before they didn’t get our orders, so we all ate the traditional breakfast, while Brab and Otto talked about a few things. Even though none of us had planned on doing anything that day we ended up having to go to our sites right after we finished breakfast. The only thing we were told was, “I was not told what you would be doing, only that the churches expect you to be there. So once you're done eating go get anything you need and then load up on the vans with your team and a jug of water.”…

It’s September 18th, 2016, and my nana and I are both sitting on my bed in which the sheets were still removed from getting washed earlier that day. She has short hair as dark as chocolate, and brown, loving eyes with circular gold frames around them that watched me as I prepared my questions. She had her signature coral lipstick on that she always wore so well. It’s an overcast, yet mildly warm day with the kind of clouds that are a smokey gray with a dash of sunlight emerging from behind them. In the background, the sounds of my family along with Seahawks game coming from the living room was undeniable.…
