One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

Roadtrip Nation Roadtrip Nation began with four friends and one question: “What do I want to do with my life?” Upon completion of their college education these four friends were unsure about the career paths and life choices ahead of them. They knew there had to be more to life than just the traditional routes laid out before them, so they planned a roadtrip to talk to inspiring people to find out how they defined their own roads in life and came to do what they love for a living. Fast-forward a few years and Roadtrip Nation is now a national success. It has evolved into a PBS series, three books, an online community, and a student movement.…
Holston Service Learning Project Service learning is a type of learning experience that involves community service to teach using real world scenarios. For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. Holston is a place for senior citizens to come when they are either too old to care for themselves at home or are recovering from surgery. I do many things when I volunteer there. I can help with anything from decorating, printing, organizing, or cleaning.…
Thomas Jefferson High School prides itself on individuality and diversity; this is why I can say with confidence that what sets Saranga apart from her peers in English class is her unique ability to remain attentive, cooperative, creative, and positive in all situations. Whether working independently, or with a group, Saranga takes the lead and ensures task or project completion with the highest amount of quality possible. Having a strong work ethic is vital for success and Saranga’s is beyond reproach-- it is contagious to those who are fortunate enough to work with her, as evidenced by her continual high academic performance as she was on Honor Roll throughout her two years at Kilmer Middle School.…
This team taught me that hard work, determination and time management are key to maintaining a sophisticated life. Throughout my high school career I was a member of the Community Housing Works program, which consisted of hundreds of volunteering hours towards; tutoring elementary school children in addition to teaching them the basics of English. Hands on work with these children reminded me of myself ten years ago, struggling with school assignments that I had no clue how to solve. Children taught me to think and see things from a different perspective, they taught me the importance of imagination and that patience truly is a…

Stop and think. How would you feel if there was no one to support you when your life is suddenly in turmoil, where your dignity as well as independence has been taken away from you, where you’re struggling completing the tasks that you used to complete without a second thought? As someone who has battled with mental health, fortunately, I have been given the support needed to aid my recovery from my family, friends and dedicated health and social care professionals. I learnt the importance of self-care and routine and expressing myself through the activities I enjoy, including my love for reading, as like me, many individuals find it extremely difficult to talk about our thoughts and feelings and require a different outlet.…
As a Speech-Language-Hearing undergraduate, I have had a combination of experiences and learning opportunities that have prepared me to enter Emerson College’s graduate school program and become a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). In my personal life, I have always wanted to be part of a profession that serves the public. My mother is a social worker and my father is a public health administrator, which means serving others is in my blood and was modeled to me from a young age. Growing up watching their commitment to the well being of others inspired this commitment in me. I chose to pursue the career path of Speech Language Pathology based on my personal values and family background.…
Last week, when I went to Adult Day Care Center, I got confused that with senior center. Thanks to Candace last week for explaining me the difference. Moreover, this week I got an opportunity to differentiate them based on their structure and services. I got an overview of senior center, their services and funding sources. Among all of yesterday’s class I loved the tour of senior center.…
The residents of Fresh Start engage in many different outreach programs, including Give Girls a Chance and the Early Start Program. Most importantly, the girls gain exposure to the arts and learn skills like dance and poetry. These provide outlets for self-expression, performance, and creativity while simultaneously giving a voice to young African American women and opportunities to express their agency as they navigate the world around them. Cox defines these unique solutions as choreography, applied to navigate gender and racial stereotypes as well as the social and racial hierarchy embedded in today’s…
