Distilled Performance Analysis

Superior Essays
The groups concept for the distilled performance is to make it a presentational performance. Since we can not use actual props or costumes, it just makes more sense to make it presentational and allows for more creative thinking. Another concept for this performance that is being worked on is a presentational table; which will be further explained later. Other than those concepts, another concept that has been brought up is presenting this performance while in a semi-circle. By doing so, it allows for the audience to get the best view possible of the main acting happening while also recognizing the other sub actions happening in the back. Some of the key ideas and themes that is drawn from this play is consists of Myra as a feminist icon, the …show more content…
At the start, a few students within the group came up with ideas on how the play can be performed. From there, the group was divided off into smaller groups based on who was more interesting in whose ideas for some table work. Within a certain time period, through table work, the individuals in those divided groups worked together, improvised and devised together to create solid ideas on how the play may be altered and performed (Leach 36). Those ideas were then presented to the class and voted upon. The groups idea that was chosen automatically took upon the job of being the head leaders. This is where group writing and scriptwriting came into play. Once the main characters of the play were selected through names drawn from a hat, as a group, it was decided that they would get their lines together and share it with the group. Additionally, to that, some of the theatrical techniques and tools that are being used in this process is the Facebook group page that was created. This Facebook group page helps to further the devising of the scriptwriting. Especially between individuals whose main role was to script write, help is always available through the Facebook page since input is often given. Also, minutes of each seminar and small group meetings are posted to keep everyone up-to-date. Another huge tool that is used is improvising …show more content…
Firstly, while doing table work in a divided group, the group was told to think of ways for Myra to act throughout the production. After brainstorming, I devised an idea of how Myra’s way of thought process can be shown and implemented into the performance. After sharing this idea, the group approved and that was final. Next, as a performer and movement director within a small group, the group had to improvise a way to make the table idea work. For that to take place, I could not just do anything to achieve that vision but to really pretend and believe to be doing it (Leach 3). By having that mindset, it made performing so much easier. After getting into the group of three, it was worked out who would be the table and who would be the patient. We then figured out ways how to sit or lay down on the human table with least amount of pressure applied. Becoming a table, in a safe manner, was achieved through this mindset. Lastly, when the Facebook group page was made, not everyone has each individual on Facebook, so I made it my duty to then take initiative and add everyone within my group to the page. By doing so, it helped to get plans on track and everyone

Being the director of “See How They Run” showed me the many characteristics a director must have in mind while thinking of how to present the play. One must have in mind the time and place the play is set in, the main focus and goal of the play, the themes and symbols that are present, and the different ways one can send all of those ideas and concepts to the audience. Summary See How They Run is situated at England in the 1940’s during WWII.…

For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf is a play by Ntozake Shange, inspired by and built from the stories of New York women of color who used to perform on bar countertops in Manhattan. The first thing I noticed when the actresses entered the stage were the costumes. While each character is represented by a color, all of them wear at least one item of another color. This seems to play with the theme of interconnection and sisterhood; these women might be different, but they all have a common humanity and experience.…

For Colored Girls In 2010 Lionsgate released For Colored Girls, a movie written and directed by Tyler Perry that was inspired by Ntozake Shange’s award winning play, For Colored Girls who have considered suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf. Perry’s film is the latest interpretation of Shange’s landmark work which was conceived over 35 years ago and was first performed in 1974 as a series of poetic monologues accompanied by dance and music at The Bacchanal bar in Berkeley, California. The author, born Paulette Williams in Trenton, New Jersey, changed her name in 1971 to Ntozake Shange (which means, “She who comes with her own things” and “She who walks with lions” in Xhosa, the Zulu language). Shortly afterward, an artistic…

“Trifles”, by Susan Glaspell, demonstrates how the female characters feel suffocated by the male characters carrying out their suppressive gender stereotypes. Glaspell uses latent symbolism as well as extensive character development to help the reader visualize and interpret the divide between the genders. The play is set in the early nineteen hundreds around a time when women were still not equal to men, which is why the main character, Minnie Wright, is idolized by the other women in the play even though she is never directly present. Throughout the entirety of the play the men and the women were never together, they always divide themselves by gender while looking for clues.…

For my “field trip” assignment, I attended Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at the Shakespeare Taven in Atlanta. The Tavern is in the midst of the city, which seems to immerse itself in Atlanta’s culture. It is a clean, building with a main floor and a balcony, where I watched the play. They also had “old-timey” foods available for purchase.…

This past week, our theater class had the opportunity to see the off-broadway performance Harriet’s Return. The play focused on the personal life and accomplishments of Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad. Upon entrance to the theater, I was shocked to see how small it was. When I envisioned how the performance setting would be, I imagined it would be much larger, seating at least 200 guests. However the 4 rows the theater had made it feel much more inclusive and home-like, almost as if it were a private showing.…

Father Comes Home from the Wars, Suzan-Lori Parks Suzan-Lori Parks created a character that had the illusion of choice. She showed how Hero’s perception of having control of his destiny undid his relationships. The costumes of this production propelled this show into modern day and made commentary on how systemic racism may still be inhibiting the freedoms of African Americans. This play forces the audience to reconcile with the past sins, and then points out the ways society still discriminates against people of color.…

Over the centuries, theatre conventions evolved from the highly presentational performances of the Greeks to the extravagance of Elizabethan productions and eventually conglomerated to produce contemporary theatre. The University Playhouse’s performance of Acting: The First Six Lessons expressed this conglomeration of Greek and Elizabethan conventions through elements of presentational theatre, a non-localized set, and a supporting cast that functioned similar to a chorus or ensemble. This performance also altered conventions through the addition of female actors, use of representational aspects, adaption of the functions of the chorus or ensemble, and lack of a raised stage. In the following sections, I will discuss the adoption and adaptation…

Thoroughly Modern Millie I watched Thoroughly Modern Millie on March 6th, 2015, at the Kravis Center, put on by the students of Dreyfoos. The sole reason why I picked this musical is due to the fact that one of my friends goes to the school and recommended me to watch the play in order to write this assignment. I was originally planning to critique Suncoast’s theatre students but their spring play does not start until April 2nd, which is beyond the deadline of this assignment. The overall experience of the play was fantastic and I would’ve love to watch the performance twice because everything just fell into place, the costumes, the set design, the producer’s choice of the cast, and so much more elements all just combined into a great play.…

The Entertainer was a show that featured the decay of a performer, his family, and his country in war. The characters continued to disillusion themselves with self-medication and by acting that everything was fine, especially Kenneth Branagh’s character, Archie. The production’s set and transitions, set dressing, and lights that came through the doorways enhanced the character’s attempts to appease their lives that were collapsing before them. One element that was evident with many of the characters throughout the play was the attempt to maintain a performance or act like everything was okay. A design element that helped to present Archie’s struggle to live authentically were the seamless transitions between the parlor/living room and the stage with the showgirls.…
