Distillation And Gas Chromatography Essay

Improved Essays
By using the techniques of simple distillation and gas chromatography to purify and determine relative proportions of volatile compounds in their gas form. Distillation could be described as a process where a mixture was heated until it began to boil, and the condensed vapor was collected. After completing the distillation process, the gas chromatography method could be used to identify the relative components of a compound in a volatile mixture. According to the analysis between the hexane-octane mixture performed in the lab and the hexane-heptane mixture performed by Frederica Shih, one can espy that the heptane mixture can be separated more easily than the octane mixture. This can be proven by comparing the percent areas of the substituents.

According to PubChem, the boiling point of pure methanol at 1 atm is 64.7°C. Distillation is a liquid separation technique based on boiling points. The experiment performed at a lower pressure would cause a decrease in the boiling point of methanol. Boiling point is defined when the vapor pressure is equal to the atmospheric pressure. Thus, decreasing the atmospheric pressure will decrease the boiling point.…

Introduction: The main purpose of this experiment was to take the Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrum part of the “Analysis of US bills for cocaine using gas chromatography / mass spectrometry” lab and improve upon the gas chromatographic results. This would be done by finding a way to separate the peaks of cocaine and doxepin. The lab done previously showed the use of two different methods to obtain samples of cocaine and doxepin for spiked dollar bills.…

The goal of the lab was to identify an unlabeled compound found in the chemistry stockroom to be able to dispose of it properly. This lab demonstrated the process of identifying an unknown compound as well as synthesizing the compound. Identifying the compound consisted of performing various tests to detect the chemical and physical properties of the compound and comparing it to the list of possible compounds. The tests conducted were the solubility test which the compound fully dissolved in water, the flame test which had no discoloration when held in the flame, cation and anion tests which showed the existence of some halides like Cl, Br, and I, pH test in which the compound had a pH of 6, and the conductivity test which had an average value…

The results provide information that both simple and fractional distillation did separate toluene and cyclohexane but the experiment-lacked accuracy especially for fractional distillation, concluding that simple distillation did a better job. In simple distillation fraction 1 and 2 showed small indications of toluene that were distilled with cyclohexane but the results for fractional distillation indicated larger amounts of toluene presented then simple distillation did for fraction 1. While in the fourth fraction; simple and fractional distillation presented there was a larger percent of toluene; which is what should’ve been seen.…

This was done by documenting the state of matter, its smell using the wafting technique, color, and structure. Following this the solubility test was conducted. This was completed by taking 1g of the unknown compound and placing it within 100mL of distilled water inside a 150mL beaker. Stirring the solution using a glass rod, observations of the unknown compound dissolving (or not) after 10 seconds are recorded. Next follows the Anion Tests in which a chloride ion test and a sulfate test were conducted.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…
