Dissonance Between Professional Nursing Theory And What Happens In Nursing Practice

Improved Essays
It is clear from the findings of the CCQ and the Francis report that there is a dissonance between professional nursing theory and what actually happens in nursing practice. In order to bridge this gap, it is essential for nurses to understand how to research effectively with the purpose of discovering best evidence which can be applied to nursing practice (Schmidt and
Brown, 2012). By using up to date and expert evidence generated from effective research, all healthcare professionals can make good clinical decisions about individual patient care
(Greenhalgh, 2010).

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

1)Research is different from clinical problem solving in that research is a systematic process by which new knowledge is discovered through the gathering of data and information from different sources(Fain, 2013). In addition, research is also done to support knowledge that already exists based on a theory to build on or improve the information that already exists. This can be knowledge that is directly applied to our practice or knowledge that needs further validation before application (Fitzpatrick, 2016). On the other hand, clinical problem solving is utilizing current knowledge to improve patient health. One of the most popular tools used by nurses in clinical problem solving is the nursing process.…

According to LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2014), the situation specific theories “are narrow in scope, explain a small aspect of phenomena and processes of interest to nurses, and are usually limited to specific populations or field of practice (p. 82). The research and practice are closely connected in the situation-specific theory. In addition, I think that it would be appropriate to apply a broader framework to this presented article such as the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services Framework (PARIHS). The theory of the PARIHS framework is that the success of evidence implementation depends on three necessary elements: evidence, context, and facilitation. Ullrich, Sahay, and Stetler (2014) stated that “successful implementation is most likely to occur when (a) scientific evidence is viewed as aligning with professional and patient beliefs, (b) healthcare context is receptive to implementation, including supportive leadership, culture and evaluation systems, and (c) mechanisms are in place to facilitate implementation” (p.…

“Nursing should not borrow theories from other disciplines” this statement is very restrictive because nursing is not just a one person job. It takes multiple individuals from multiple disciplines to come together and work as a team to achieve a task. Everyone needs assistance and guidance to perform any task and as long as the use of theories are being used for the betterment of patients then there should not be any issues. But using someone else work and stating as their own would be absolutely wrong.…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care. What makes research so credible is because experiments are used to conclude any theories that scientists put in study. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Therefore, it is important for nurses to update their knowledge by always informing themselves about any current new researches.…
