In the catholic Bible it says “hearken to your father who begot you and do not despise your mother when she is old”(proverbs 23:22). This teaches the importance of not turning your back on parents when they are old. Parents do a lot for their child and should be taken care of as they age. Still, many times children unjustly neglect, steal, and abuse their parents when they can not longer tend their needs. The bible also teaches us to “ Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged” (Leviticus 19:32). Christians are taught to be respectful and kind to those who are older and treat them with care and respect because they are people

Working with seniors in the case of abuse is challenging and demanding, and social workers need to use an anti-oppressive approach in order to address the issue and meet seniors’ needs. Additionally, social workers need to have a deep knowledge about risk factors, symptoms of neglect and elder abuse, in order to address the consequences and prevent them from reoccurrence (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Elder abuse is a result of oppression based on age, which means that structural anti-oppression intervention surrounding aging is required in order to “confront and change social institutions, policies, laws, and economic and political systems that operate in a way that benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groups” (Mullaly, 2007,…

Lastly, Moana rolls her eyes (a sign of disrespect and contempt) and says to the elderly lady “if there is something you want to tell me, just tell me!” The elderly lady then responds, “…Is there something you want to hear?” This strengthens the misconception that people who “look” tribal are indirect, mysterious, exotic, strange, and ambiguous. Moana rolling her eyes also permits scornful attitudes towards the elderly lady since young children look up to the main protagonist, Moana. This subtly relates to the larger issue of scornful attitudes being permissible towards cultures that seem “odd” or deviant from the dominant Western culture.…

Due to the fact that the “elderly population is rapidly growing with the aging of the Baby Boomers, there is likely to be a future increase in the prevalence of elder mistreatment” (Development of a Causal model for elder mistreatment, pg.363). According to professor Hogan, 80% of elder abuse takes place in the household. However, that 20% of elder abuse are significant as well and should be addressed. Attitudes that are based on false information and stereotypes facilitate stigmatization of older people. For example, older people are viewed as childlike or nice grandparents and therefore workers tend to take a paternalistic stance with them that compromises assessment, treatment plans (as cited in Youdin, 2014). Many socially constructed optics produced by stigma can bias social worker’s views of older people (Youdin, 2014).Stigma occurs when individuals are devalued by society because of physical deformities, psychological problems, or medical illness. By identifying with the stigma propagandized in the public area, older adults will convert a stigmatizing concept into an internalized self-stigma.
