We are easily affected and shaped by society in a variety of ways. In an attempt to comprehend how society affects us, the Attribution Theory had been created as a solution. This theory is split into two subcategories; situational attribution and dispositional attribution. Situational attribution relate to the factors outside the person doing the action. An example of this is others influencing the person’s decision, otherwise known as peer pressure. Dispositional attribution refers to the person’s behavior and emotions rather than external conflicts. This involves person’s stability, enduring traits, personality, ability, and emotions. Due to being a gregarious species, humans desire to fit in along with other members of society. To do so, we adopt beliefs and adjust our behavior to allow ourselves to become more relatable with others in order to be socially accepted. Though a person may have an opposing view on a certain topic, that person may change his or her belief to be accepted by a group that thinks otherwise. Asch Conformity studies have illustrated around one-third of people will accept obvious mistruths to align their beliefs with those in the group. …show more content…
A person may conform due to the lack of commitment to a belief, the group is of a medium size, admiration of a group, feelings of incompetency or insecurity, or societal expectations for the respect of social rules. Two different types of social influence may affect the person as well. Normative Social Influence affects people with the fear of disapproval and the satisfaction of social acceptance. This is how others may influence something like clothing. Informational Social Influence relies more on sensical information.
