The business was formed in 2011 by Tony Merton and Shawn Huguley. They both wanted a place to sell their marijuana flowers and other related products from their growing operations. They started the dispensary with $20,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of marijuana flowers.

On June 3, 2011, the U.S. District Attorney of Oregon served notice on Oregon’s marijuana dispensaries, stating that it was illegal for dispensaries to operate. The district attorneys from each county in Oregon signed the notice except for the Multnomah County D.A. who refused to sign the letter and stated, “There were way more important things for him to worry about”. The use of Marijuana medically has been in controversy for years. The question behind it is what is marijuana actually and why it is in the controversy and why people talk about it? Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant (1). It has been in the picture even during 2900BC when the Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi, whom the Chinese credit with bringing civilization to China, seems to have made reference to Ma, the Chinese word for Cannabis, noting that Cannabis was very popular medicine that possessed both yin and yang (2). According to Statistics Canada, there has been 3.4 million…

The marijuana being sold has been tracked at every step of the grow operation from planting to harvest, so there is a consistency and safety to the product that is not found on the street. It is still likely too early to draw conclusions on how the legalization of marijuana has affected these states. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the data on how this legalization affects youth, safety, and overall usage. Even with the passing of Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Amendment Act of 2010, some D.C. residents who need medical marijuana are concerned about a number of things, such as, lack of privacy when walking into a dispensary, the possibility of being arrested by federal agents after exiting a dispensary (marijuana is still illegal at the Federal level), or not being able to afford buying their marijuana from a dispensary. Some would rather grow their own marijuana plants in the privacy of their home, use it as they see fit and not worry about being arrested. With that being said, a push for decriminalization for small amounts of marijuana was set in…

An Open Letter to Congress, Since before Nixon’s declaration of the war on drugs, our nation’s policy makers have stigmatized the use of marijuana of any form. Since then research has found many novel uses for marijuana medically. With the enactment of Proposition 215 in 1996, the stigmatization of marijuana began the slow start of dismantling. Proposition 215 allowed those with the agreement of their primary care giver the ability to possess or grow marijuana for medical purposes—without the fear of legal recourse on the state level.
