Disparity Among Women

When the words “pay gap” are spoken, some may think of the pay gap between men and women. What about looking at it more specifically in terms of race among women? In 2016, women were paid 80 cents for every dollar men earned. That comes up to a gender wage gap of $10,470 in one year! For women who work full-time, year-round jobs in the United States, White women earned 79 cents for every dollar white men earned, and Asian women earned 86 cents for every dollar. Black women earned 63 cents for every dollar and Hispanic/Latina women earned 54 cents for every dollar. Comparing the earnings between 2015 and 2016, we earn an even greater sense of disparity among race. White women’s pay increased by 4.9%, Asian women’s pay by 2.8%, and Hispanic women’s pay by 0.1%. Meanwhile, Black women’s pay decreased by 1.3%.

What do all these numbers mean? There is an unequal representation of races within the pay gap. All other racial groups’ wages compared to White men were increased, yet only Black women’s wages decreased. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it illegal for employers to

For single women, the poverty rate would drop from 10.8% to 4.4%. If equal pay were implemented, the United States economy would have an additional income of $512.6 billion, increasing the gross domestic product of 2016 to 2.8%. Ultimately, confronting and understanding the many factors that contribute to the inequality may help close the gender and racial pay gap. People should not be receiving less pay than White men because of characteristics they were born

How many cents are in one dollar? One hundred, right. That’s what we’re taught in kindergarten, but it seems as though many people have never learned that. Many people, specifically employers seem to think that there are 78 cents in a dollar, so they give 78 cents to women, while they give a dollar to men. Now in the real world, where 78 cents does not equal a dollar, this 22 cents gap is known as the gender gap.…

This rate decreases for non-Asian women of color, with Hispanic women earning the lowest at 58 cents for a man’s dollar. As for men of color, all earn less than white men, except for Asian men, who actually earn an average $1.17 for every white man’s dollar. In 2014, white American women, on average, made 79 cents to every white man’s dollar, a wage gap of 21% (AAUW 2014). This pay gap increases when including other possible intersections, especially age and race. While the pay gap has narrowed since the 1960s, America ranks lowly compared to other developed nations, having the 74th highest pay gap out of 165 countries (Kottasova 2015). Despite this, the narrowing of the pay gap has stalled, even though there has been a greater push for equality in modern American society and a widespread feminist protest against the current pay system (AAUW 2014). The pay system remains due to the conservation of traditional society, an effort to maintain social order, and how we learn and respond to gender in…

In North America, nearly half of the workforce consists of females. Yet, females are still receiving lower pay than males even though they are equally trained, experienced and educated as their male coworkers, causing a gender wage gap (Blau and Kahn, 2016). Corbett and Hill (2012) discovered that in United States, women, who graduated in 2008 from the same college as men and who had a full-time employment during 2009, received “82 cents for every dollar” their male coworkers received. It is predicted by Institute for Woman’s Policy Research (IWRP) that it will take females around 45 years to reach wage equality with their male colleagues (Hegewisch and DuMonthier, 2010).…

Whether it is religion, sexuality, race, or even music taste, people are constantly finding ways to discriminate by differentiating people from each other. One element is gender pay gap--ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, women were always proven to be insignificant compared to men. Gender pay gap plays a negative role--socially, economically, and politically. Although the gender pay gap is a widespread problem that cannot be completely eradicated, society should be giving more of an effort into taking small steps to solving the problem so the future generations could benefit from knowing what is right -- by solving one of the most unfair stigmatized elements in society.…

While many might argue that discrimination against women has dissipated over the past fifty years, it still plays a role in the gender wage gap. We can still see hints of discrimination as we listen to politicians’ debate about whether or not a woman can be an effective President of the United States. In addition to discrimination, gender roles and domestic responsibilities have had significant influence on the gender wage gap. Domestic duties are still largely handled by women making them more likely than men to leave the workplace when domestic issues arise. Because of this, women may be seen as less valuable than men and if a women needs to take maternity leave or request time off to care for sick children, she may be considered a threat to long term productivity (Magnusson, 2010).…
