In addition to the Healthier Generation program, Clayton County Board of health developed an additional initiative called “Making Our Mothers Successful” (MOMS), which is a community-based effort to reduce the infant mortality disparities in the county.6
>These project came about as a consequence of infants not living past their first birthday, especially in the African-American communities,7 and to meet the Healthy People 2020 infant mortality target goal of 6.0 deaths per 1,000 live births.1 Infants mortality rate for the State of Georgia is 7.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, and in Clayton County it is 9.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative: Georgia is made up of 159 counties, and out of those counties, 29 counties account for 70 percent of infant deaths, and six significant clusters that is made up of 13 counties, ranked exceptionally higher overall in preterm birth and low birth weight.6 According to the DPH, the maternal mortality rate in Georgia is among the worst in the nation, and non-Hispanic Black infants are about 2.5 times higher than non-Hispanic whites.6 Consequently, the DPH has launched their Infant Mortality Reduction initiative to combat and reduce IMR with Georgia.
