The Human World of Animals Disney’s Zootopia, directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore, and Jared Bush, is a delightful movie that can provide enjoyment to an audience of all ages. The story tells about a bunny named Judy Hopkins, who aspires to be a police officer when she grows up. The world she has grown up in has two main social classes of more human-like animals, predators, and prey, and shows the different kind of social norms that connect with them. Judy wants to break the status quo, and the movie shows her journey to proving herself in the big world. Along the way, she receives help from unlikely people, such as a fox named Nick, who help her throughout. The movie cleverly creates it to accustom every type of animal, from having gerbil tubes for hamsters and smaller streets for rats, to having elevators to transport smoothies to towering giraffes. This attention to detail makes the setting feel like it functions well and is natural, which is perfect for a movie of this nature. Also, while Zootopia is a world created for animals, references to our regular world are continually made to make it feel surprisingly relatable. One illustration of this is in the city’s DMV. These world building techniques are done excellently and provide an immersive world to …show more content…
Throughout the entire movie, Judy is faced with a constant struggle having to deal with discrimination, social norms, and prejudice both classes share towards each other. It is not until near the end that Judy finally is accepted as a well-qualified cop as she solves the case, but there’s more to the mystery than she might have thought. The predators going “savage’ was a result of an animal in the prey group, the assistant of the mayor of the large city, creating a serum like concoction that caused this effect. The assistant mayor did this to create fear towards all predators. Predators are already a minority, so this plan puts prey even higher up in society. The situation creates a surprisingly deep message and causes us to ponder how it can apply to our

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Most people think of small animals, such as sheep, as meek and submissive due to their frequent portrayal as innocent characters in children’s stories and folklore; in these same stories, antagonistic characters tend to be fiercer animals such as lions or wolves. However, the children’s movie Zootopia shows that this is not always the case. The characters in this film break the stereotypes that the audience have against them by being different from what is conventional. For instance, the "dumb bunny" Judy Hopps solves the case of the savage predators, and Nick Wilde turns from a sly con artist to the first fox cop. This includes a sheep by the name of Dawn Bellwether, who is the assistant mayor and mayor of Zootopia.…
