Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805, lived a life full life of success through his short stories and poetry, to die happily in 8175. Andersen consulted a composer about the music for his funeral, saying: "Most of the people who will walk after me will be children, so make the beat keep time with little steps." I feel as though if Andersen saw how his stories where twisted into the stories that Disney told he would not have died so happily. Many people believe Disney has ruined the original source material that many of their movies are based on. In the book The Little Mermaid: Three Political Fables they state “Yet the tale is also predicated on the marriage quest, although in the end the mermaid renders invisible care to the sick and the young, not to a husband.” What they are saying is that (yes, even though Disney’s My Little Mermaid is not perfect) The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen it is far too focused on the political ideals that there are very set things in a society on what the role of both a man and woman are. It is understandable why the opposition believes that the original source material that Disney is using is far from perfect because there is without a doubt a large amount of flaws when viewed in today’s society. Nevertheless I do not think it is okay to try to change (or even in some extreme situations erase) what has happened in the past just because it doesn’t align with today’s beliefs. If we are not to use history to learn about what has happened, why it was a success of a failure then we are going to be in a never ending cycle of having to learn about what we experience today without any judgement based on what has happened in similar situations in the past. However, I can not simply tell you to do something and then not explain why or do it
