Disney's Pocahontas: Valuable To Children?

Decent Essays
Pocahontas is a valuable to children because most children have seen Disney’s version of Pocahontas. Most children are familiar with her story, but they do not know the true story of Pocahontas. I think this book would be interesting for students to read because they could compare and contrast between Disney’s version and the true story of Pocahontas. The students could see which parts from the movie were true about her life and which parts Disney added to it. Children will be able to see how brave Pocahontas is and how much courage she had to stand up to her tribe to stop them from killing John Smith. Pocahontas character traits are valuable to read to children because she represents bravery and courage.

Within the historical novel, Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma, Camila Townsend engenders/recounts the complexity that is the story of Pocahontas and Native Americans within the Americas’, during their horrid enslavement and colonization from the Europeans (specifically the Spanish). Though Townsend’s text is not a primary source, the credibility and importance of the novel is nonetheless very crucial regarding, exclaiming the ‘true’ story of the powerful Pocahontas and the Powhatan.
