Compare And Contrast Disney And Cinderella

Improved Essays
While reading the original version of Cinderella by Grimm’s, I noticed that Disney didn’t just remake the movie. They changed quite a few important aspects of the story and also removed some. The first difference I observed in Disney’s version of Cinderella is that Disney removed the death of Cinderella’s’ mother. In the original version Cinderella had a difficult time accepting the death of her mother. Disney’s version made Cinderella’s principal crisis as making it to the ball. An additional difference between the two films is that the original version by Grimm’s ending included the step sisters going blind due to the birds pecking out their eyes. Disney’s very popular version displayed the step sisters as ugly. The third difference is the …show more content…
Cinderella’s father took no action or initiative in changing how her step mother treated her because he also viewed Cinderella’s as just a servant. Though there was endless differences in the two stories, there was also some similarities. In both Disney and Grimm’s version of Cinderella, Cinderella had task that had to be completed before attending the ball. Another very obvious similarity is that both stories aim to teach the audience that being compassionate and kind is how a person should always act. (Grogaard, 4). While reading both stories it was obvious who the intended audience was for each author. Disney’s version of Cinderella, in my opinion, was made specifically for a younger audience. Disney did not include Cinderella’s mother’s death and the father’s harsh treatment towards Cinderella. Disney also made Cinderella complete her chores alone before attending the ball. My perspective is that this was Disney’s way of installing in children that the right thing to do in situations where you have to choose between work and play. Always be responsible and complete your work and then enjoy …show more content…
By the 1900s it was obvious that most of the audience watching Cinderella was a younger audience. So the cruel and violent scenes that the Grimm’s brother included in the original version needed to be reconstructed. One very important part of the story that had to be changed was the part where the bird pecked out the sisters part (Thorpe, 9). Disney definitely didn’t want children thinking birds would one day cause them to go blind! The overall effect of the original version was to create scenes that all ages could relate to. The older crowd knew that birds would never peck out their sister’s eyeballs for being mean. But the children who didn’t know that did learn that there’s consequences for being rude to your siblings or people in general. Both stories were made to teach the lesson “to always be generous and stay true to yourself” (Grogaard, 1). Overall, the Grimm’s brother just portrayed the message in a more harsh way. The original version of Cinderella offers reality to all audiences. The Grimm’s version displays real life scenarios that people of all ages could relate

The last time she leaves behind a golden shoe on the staircase the Prince had covered with pitch. When the Prince brings the shoe around looking for his true bride, as only the woman whose foot fits into the slipper can be his true bride, the evil stepsisters both cut off a part of their foot in an attempt to fool the Prince and in the end neither sister was truly his bride. When passing birds, which had helped Cinderella with the tasks her stepmother had given her to prevent her from going to the ball and also presented her with the wardrobe each night she went to the ball, also informed the prince each time he passed with one of the step-sisters that they had a bloody foot in the slipper and each time he took them back. At last he asks the stepmother if she has any other daughter and she says no, but the father mentions Cinderella and even refers to her as “a little stunted kitchen-wench my late wife left behind her, but she cannot possibly be the bride.” The prince insists she try on the shoe, which fit of course.…

The Brother Grimm’s version of Cinderella has hidden meanings in the stories that teach us about how the story resembles or symbolize our society. The first symbol in the story that stood out to me the most is the stepsisters representing society 's cruelness and greed. The second symbol was the stepmother’s envy of Cinderella 's beauty, because Cinderella was more beautiful than her daughter 's. The stepmother thought that her daughter’s were not as beautiful as Cinderella and as a result she was envious of Cinderella, this represent a society dominated by envy and hate. The third symbol is the hazel tree that provided Cinderella with the wisdom and inspiration to overcome the abuse she was going through, this represents how society rewards…

Cinderella had a fairy godmother in Perrault version, while she had a dead mother in form of a magic tree in the Grimms’ version. In Perrault version, the king invited all the young girls in the kingdom to the ball and in the Grimm’s brother’s version, the king invited all of the young girls to a festival for his son to be able to choose a bride. In Perrault version, Cinderella’s fairy godmother made all her dreams come true, turning huge a rat into a fat coachman with “the finest mustache and whiskers ever seen”, mice into fine horses in “beautiful mouse-colored dapple gray”, lizards into a carriage, and her rags turned into cloth of gold and silver all decked with jewels. In the Grimm version, Cinderella had to lay on her mother’s grave beneath the hazel-tree and cry to her mother before the birds threw down a “gold and silver dress and slipper embroidered with silk and silver”. In the Perrault version, when the two stepsisters tried the slipper on and it didn’t fit them perfectly, they were disappointed.…

My favorite as a child was Disney’s version of Cinderella, which is the story I most enjoyed reading the differences between the new and older versions. The first difference you see straight away is that the name of the story wasn’t originally Cinderella, but Aschenputtle. She was called Aschenputtle because she was always dirty covered in ashes, which represented her losing her virginity. In this case, Aschenputtle lost her virginity through incest and because of this her stepmother hated her. This was something I didn’t think to be the case when watching the Disney film.…
