The company which was brought up on animated shorts, moved toward animated feature length movies, and then added television series. Walt also created a Disney theme park known as Disneyland in 1955, which was to bring his audience to a wondrous place where they could meet Disney characters and experience the happiness he tried to instill in his creations. After Walt’s death, the company then controlled by his brother Roy, opened Walt Disney World. This was one of Walt’s plans that his brother Roy carried to fruition after his demise. Nowadays the company has been expanding parks and creating new ones. It began with one while Walt Disney was actually alive, and the second initially planned by him. Currently however there are now additional parks including Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, “sister park” California Adventure, and the newest property Shanghai, projected to open in June of this year 2016 (fortune). Disney has also been utilizing acquisitions as of late to expand its character collection. This gives the company subsequent intellectual property rights and the power to license character usage to third parties. They have had some prominent acquisitions over the years including ABC, ESPN, Pixar, Marvel, and most recently LucasFilms (themeparktourist). These acquisitions have allowed the company to expand at an exponential rate to truly sky-high projections. The recent Marvel and LucasFilm acquisitions in particular will set the company up for stable movies and character merchandising for at least the next decade; if not longer. Currently the company has been incorporating these newly acquired characters within their theme parks in the form of merchandise, rides, and shows. Disney has plans to expand their popularity higher than ever before. By exploiting its prestigious brand image and distribution channels, Disney will be able to position these franchises better than their original parent
