For my final project, I chose to collaborate at the J-cat Cultural Arts Theater under the supervision of Michael Andron. The play that I collaborated on was called “Shrek the musical”. My initial duty in this play was to control the character’s microphones. However, due to low tech staffing, I was offered an open position in lighting, and even though I did not get the chance to be in the booth to control the microphones, I was able to see how both sound and lighting played an important role in this play. Ever since lighting rehearsals started, I was able to see how the lighting changes the mood of the scene and how each actor, when they were in the spotlight, had their own unique story to tell.…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…

Where I live, after school, kids head to their houses, in one way or another. When they arrive home, they sit down at the computer, pick up a tablet, or turn on a phone and play games. This isn’t bad in small doses, but in larger amounts it can stand in the way of the child’s life outside of screens. These screentime addicts never meet new people and have no real, flesh-and-bone friends. I believe that we need a new youth theater group, because children will have a chance to meet new friends and discover more about themselves through acting and watching others act.…
